A former New Mexico state Human Services employee, Carla Noftzger, along with eight other people, are under investigation. Noftzger allegedly issued an estimated $400,000 to those people for illegitimate reasons through the Medicaid travel program.
They are accused of cashing the unnecessary checks and splitting the money with Noftzger.
Noftzger presently faces one count of racketeering, 17 counts of fraud, six counts of conspiracy to commit fraud and two counts of making or permitting false public vouchers. All others involved face accessory to fraud, and one man involved also has pending charges of recketeering, fraud, and conspiracy. Prosecutors also said it's possible more people will face charges.
