The Elegance of the Gideon Putnam Hotel in Saratoga Springs, New York

Hidden away in the quaint college town of Saratoga Springs, New York is a stately old hotel called the Gideon Putnam. Staying there is like going back in time to the Victorian days, with the classical surroundings, park setting and beauty. It is located next to the Roosevelt Baths, a mineral water spring used by President Roosevelt late in the 1930’s, making it a popular stop for the rich and famous of that time. The spa continues as retreat and spring to this day. A calm and soothing environment, the Gideon Putnam is perfect for weddings, or adults who want a romantic getaway.

As a kid, my parents and I stayed at the Gideon Putnam in the middle of a severe New York blizzard. We had the place practically to ourselves, and it was like a fairyland. With muted lighting, lovely place settings, white linen tablecloths and beautifully arranged flowers on our table, we felt like royalty instead of weary travelers stopped by a storm. The staff was highly professional and inviting, and the rooms had the old fashioned charm, comfort and elegance of fifty years prior. As the snow raged down outside, we sat in the dining room, next to the window and had a first class meal with no hassles. The hotel was decorated for the upcoming Christmas holidays, which made everything look especially festive.

If you’re planning a wedding, or love to throw parties, the Gideon Putnam is a wonderful place to do both. It is surrounded by the Saratoga State Park, and is adjacent to the local horse racetrack, Roosevelt Spa and Saratoga Performing Arts Center. The average rate per night is around $290 but look out for getaway packages and other offers. The atmosphere is serene, quiet and romantic, making it a perfect locale for a romantic weekend with that someone special. Even just going there for dinner or a spa treatment would be a lovely getaway after a busy work week.

The town of Saratoga Springs is a fun place to walk around, visit restaurants and cultural events. Skidmore College is there, so if you plan a college trip, spend a night at the Gideon Putnam on your way between campus visits. It was such an atmospheric town and hotel that I considered Skidmore, but they didn’t offer my major there. Still, the family memories live on of a grand hotel built to provide glamour and elegance to everyone, not just the rich. Leave the modern day behind for the moment and step back in time, to experience more than just a night in a hotel but the beauty and culture of the whole area. You’ll be glad that you did.
