A Reign of Terror in Islamabad
“Today the police unleashed a reign of terror in Islamabad on the Constitution Avenue right in front of the Supreme Court building and the Election Commission of Pakistan. Unarmed lawyers, who were peacefully protesting the decision of the Supreme Court in favor of the military dictator of Pakistan, were severely beaten without any provocation. The extent of this naked aggression and terror by the police was such that it went on rampage even against the media persons who were just providing the live coverage of the lawyers' protest. 34 journalists and 80 lawyers were were critically injured, including leading lawyers such as Aitazaz Ahsan and Ali Ahmed Kurd. The police personnel not only have made excessive use of tear gas, and have pelted the protesting lawyers and the journalists with rocks, but have also broken TV cameras and have cut camera cables. Later live transmissions of major private TV channels were blocked for hours in a bogus attempt to hide these events from the public."
These events have already been reported on major TV channels and news websites. I was particularly amazed the way Mr. Abdur Raziq (username=Raziq) had reported the event by putting the entire blame on the journalists in the news item "Information minister of state is beaten up by angry laywers and journalists" (articleID=2835937). The event did happen, when the driver of the minister's limo had driven it over the foot of one of the journalists in an attempt to drive away when the police was battering the journalists. Mr. Raziq made no attempt to give the complete picture, and has deliberately toed to the line of the military junta of Pakistan. The most damning part of his post was the outrageous statement that Aitazaz Ahsan was beaten by the lawyers and journalists, which forced me to leave a comment on his webpage. He immediately deleted my comments and modified his post without explicitly writing who was responsible for the manhandling of the noted lawyer. How shameful!! The accomanied image shows who is going after him. Do they look like journalists?
