The villainous kiss between Hollywood star Richard Gere and actress Shilpa Shetty at an open function in Delhi earlier this month has landed the two in legal dilemma. An Indian court ordered the arrest of Hollywood star Richard Gere on Thursday for that 'obscene' kissing.
The judge watched a video footage of Gere kissing Shetty and found him responsible of violating Indian laws against public obscenity, the lawyer, Poonam Chand Bhandari, said to news agencies. During the function, Gere teasingly grabbed Shilpa and planted several kisses on her cheek, to howls of appreciation from an audience, which mainly comprised lorry drivers.
While the protesters saw the act as an outrage against Shetty's modesty and Indian culture, Shetty dismissed the outrage as an 'over-reaction' that made India look silly.

Richard Gere's action may not be intentional but he just couldn't resist the beauty of the Indian actress, which is quite different from the rest of the world. But it is ironical to know that given India's burgeoning population of at least a billion people, conservatism is still the name of the game. Kissing in public under the Indian culture is shunned because it stimulates others to do the same. Is India afraid that its population will grow more? Not good for Gere who was only to share his time for the international AIDS awareness program.
