PLA Men Getting Ill

Forced to drink contaminated tubewell water full of arsenic, Maoist people’s Liberation Army (PLA) fighters camped at Chulachuli in the Eastern Nepal are getting sick. They have been staying there in the UN-monitored cantonment for about two years as guided by the country’s peace process.

The division Assistant Commander of the Chulachuli Cantonment Pawel informed journalists the the PLA men have been suffering from cholera, pneumonia, diarrhea and other infectious diseases due to lack of  clean drinking water. The Nepal government has not managed hygienic drinking water systems for the 800 Maoist fighters in the cantonment. However, they are hopefully waiting for the GTZ to complete constructing a water tank at the camp premises.

A similar complaint was media-highlighted in August 2007 when human rights teams visited the cantonment. No news has yet come if any human rights teams have reached the Chulachuli Cantonment to get details about the current plight.
