Residents of Lesvos Want LGBT Community To Quit Using The Word 'Lesbian'
Recently, it would look as if the residents of Lesvos and the international LGBT community may clash with each other soon enough. But, it would not be on the issue of sexuality and sexual preference. Some of those that live on Lesvos want the LGBT community to quit using the word “lesbian.” On a geography note, Lesvos is a Greek island.
Some of those have already taken action. They have filed a suit barring Greece’s LGBT community from using the word “lesbian.” One would ask: Why are they making such a move?
To some of the residents of Lesvos, gay women are not “lesbians.” To them, it is not about sexual orientation. They feel that they are true “lesbians” and gay women are not “true lesbians.” Those that live on Lesvos feel that the word of “lesbian” is something that defines their origins from the Greek island and not something to define gay women.
It does make people wonder why the word was used to define gay women. It is revealed that Lesvos is the birthplace for the poet Sappho. Sappho was known for writing love poems about gay women. On an interesting note, Lesvos is an international hotspot for gay women or “lesbians” from across the globe. This prevents an interesting and humorous twist of irony. What makes it more interesting is that the village of Eressos, where Sappho is from is the most popular gathering spot for the same group.
While some of the residents of Lesvos can complain, there is the realization that those same people do bring business to the island. In a sense, the residents of Lesvos could risk losing a serious chunk of business.
Evangelia Vlami, the representative of Greece’s LGBT community said that they will be laughing in the court room. The case is set to go to court this coming June. During that time, the LGBT community in Greece may not be the only people laughing.
This story should be bringing laughs and guffaws on a global scale. While the reason for such a court case is understandable, if things go sour, the people of Lesvos could potentially lose a lot of business.
