Russia under Barrage of Criticism by World Leaders
In the beginning it seemed as though only France and the United States were going to stand up and be critical of Russia in its handling of the Georgian situation. However, it seems that as many as seven of the world’s super powers are now criticizing Russia and calling for tough sanctions. Much of this comes in the wake of Moscow recognizing the independence of two breakaway towns in Georgia. The towns in question are South Ossetia and Abkhazia which have been seeking separation from Georgia since the breakup of the old Soviet Union.
The world’s leaders are calling Moscow’s attempt to legitimize these cities as independent states nothing more than a direct threat against Georgia and its sovereignty. So far the tally of economic powers that are opposing Russia include, the US, France, Great Britain, Canada, Japan, Germany, and Italy. That seems to be just about everybody in the G8 which does not bode well for Russia. Russia could survive the economic upheaval brought on by one, maybe two of these nations, but not all, and certainly not at the same time.
It seems as though Russia may have to rethink its strategy in this matter and come to understand that its bullying tactics of yesteryear are no longer effective in a world that will stand together for the greater good. In my opinion it seems as though we are heading into a new “Cold War” and at this moment everybody is just choosing sides. The US has a slight advantage this time only because of the Baltic States as well as the breakaway states of the old Soviet Union. Countries such as Ukraine and Georgia are hostile towards Russia and are on firm footing with the US and its policies.
Already we see NATO beginning to get involved in the squabble between Russia and Georgia. This comes as no surprise considering that the US is the heavy hitter in the NATO organization. Meanwhile, news reports are coming out that Moscow is trying to win and influence friends, mostly in the Arab Nations. Earlier last week Russia was in the midst of missile deal with Syria which would put Israel in serious jeopardy. However, Russia President Medvedev had played down the missile deal after Israel made its concerns heard.
Nevertheless, Russia has been openly helping the Iranians in their nuclear enrichment program which is seen in the Middle East as a destabilizing factor. This is purely speculation on my part but perhaps this is the reason that Russia has found itself in such treacherous waters with the rest of the world’s leaders. It is obvious that nobody wants to see a nuclear Iran, because than any country can soon become a target.
