Domestic Violence Rampant in India: "What Else Should I Do Besides Beat Her?"
When asked about domestic violence, one man replied, "What else should I do besides beat her? Worship her or what?" This repulsive mentality is far too common among many Indian men.
In the same report done by Samvad, a Video Volunteer's correspondent, another man explains that women are often beaten in India because they, "fail to cook the food properly, roam around outside, and wear make up".
But physical abuse is not the only issue that these women must deal with. In the same report, one woman interviewed was given only two cups of rice and a few spoons of oil a day by her husband. With this inadequate amount of food she was expected not only to survive, but also to breast feed her infant.
This is a culture where many people do not talk about their personal lives, and many women are fearfully forced into silence. Therefore, there are few outlets for women suffering from domestic violence to escape the wrath of their husbands.
Reports like these alarm many communities around the world, and in doing so, place great importance upon the groups and organizations that enable marginalized community voices to be heard. To learn more about the domestic violence that many Indian women face, and to see these women share their personal stories, watch this concise video.
