Melanoma Cancer Creeps Up On Us Without Notice

Barbara K. Smith Region: United States

I had a dear friend years ago who was on vacation at the beach with her husband when she noticed a rather large black jagged spot on his lower back and it looked like it had been there for awhile. She told her husband when they get back home that she wanted him to visit the doctor because it didn't look good. She tried to enjoy their vacation but in the back of her mind this large black spot kept a nagging uneasy ... more

Banks Still Dual-Tracking in California

Dean Walker Region: United States

California has long been considered the epicenter of the nation’s worst housing crises in generations. In order to stem the tide of foreclosures, last year Governor Jerry Brown signed into law the Homeowner Bill of Rights.  The Homeowners Bill of Rights is essentially a series of related bills meant to protect homeowners from some of the most egregious practices by the banks. Most notably, the bills ba... more

I was placed on hormone replacement therapy (HRT) for several years for the early stages of menopause symptoms. I was suffering from severe hot flashes, wide-eyed nights, and feeling flushed all the time. The doctor told me there were possible risks when I was put on the treatment but he would keep a close check on me. According to an article in the todayhealth.today.com report there had been reports regar... more

I've found out using hydrogen peroxide has many good benefits for cleaning various rooms in a house, i.e., kitchen, bathroom, laundry, floors, and for plant life. "The Adventures of High John the Conqueror" by Steve Sanfield, illustrated by John Ward

Sparrow Region: New York

I found this book for free at the thrift shop in Phoenicia, New York (the hamlet where I live); it's for children, but every American should read it. I'd heard of High John the Conqueror in the Muddy Waters song, "Mannish Boy":   I think I'll go down, To Old Kansas Stu; I'm gonna bring back my second cousin, High John the Conqueroo   -- but I never knew who he was. In fact, he's a folk hero, l... more

Is this how the dead get our attention?

Violet Snow Region: New York

While visiting my friend Sara, I picked up a novel called Carry the One in her bathroom and read the first chapter, in which a 10-year-old girl dies when she runs in front of a car. The next morning, I opened another book, Half a Life, on Sara’s kitchen table. It was a memoir by a man who accidentally killed a teenaged girl on a bicycle when she veered in front of his car. He was 17. At this point, I ... more
