It was only days ago that former Colombian Senator Ingrid Betancourt was freed from captivity. For slightly over six years, Betancourt was held captive by the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC). It was by tricking FARC that the Colombia’s security forces managed to rescue Betancourt. Last night, CNN had aired the HBO documentary about Betancourt’s kidnapping and how her family, friends, and supporters are trying to free her.
The documentary was about Betancourt’s kidnapping at the time she was representing the Oxygen Green Party for her presidential run. Ignoring government warnings, Betancourt campaigned in areas with high concentration of FARC presence. Betancourt’s kidnapping had gotten the attention of France since she has dual citizenship.
In the documentary, one of Betancourt’s supporters and campaign workers said that she is probably writing all the details while in captivity. One would get the idea that Betancourt might write a book about her ideal. When I saw the documentary, it was the one thing that had crossed my mind.
However, that is not the case.
Instead of writing a book, Betancourt said that she is going to write a play about her six-year ordeal under FARC captivity. No further details have been given out. All Betancourt said was that she was going to write a play about it. What type of play will it be?
Will it be a regular play or a musical production? A musical production of the ordeal would be entertaining.
On one hand, it might be easier to write a book about it. On the other hand, while it looks more difficult to write a play, this is an original concept.
Regardless, one question that should be asked is: Is Betancourt stable enough to write out the play?
Doctors have explained to Betancourt that she could suffer psychological trauma after being freed from captivity. However, Betancourt was prepared and explained she has already gone through it.
While in her Paris hotel room, Betancourt thought the FARC had returned when her son had turned off the lights.
With Betancourt’s mentioning of writing a play, who will be the first production company to made a bid?
