Bijbehara Sports Club lifts APL-III Cricket Tournament trophy

Anantnag, May 19 (Scoop News) –The Bijbehara Sports Club today lifted APL-III Cricket Tournament-2013 trophy defeating Lions Club Anantnag by 5 wickets in the final.

The APL-III Cricket Tournament-2013 which concluded here today was organized by the I RR Mahar in collaboration with Department of Youth Services and Sports.

District Development Commissioner, Anantnag, Dr.Farooq Ahmed Lone was the chief guest, while as Brigadier, Deepak Banerjee, Commander/Sector 1 RR was the guest of honour on the occasion.

As many as 24 teams participated during the tournament.

Highlighting the importance of sports, the District Development Commissioner said that sports play vital role in shaping the personality of the youth. It inculcates the sense of team spirit and quick decision making power.

He said the government has taken various steps to construct and up-grade the existing sports infrastructure in the District.

Aasif Rasool has been declared man of the match from Bijbehara team, while as Hanan Gowhar from Young Kodipora was declared man of the series.

Later, the Chief Guest gave away trophies, medals and cash prizes among winner and runners-up teams.

Drive against illicit poppy cultivation in South Kashmir

Anantnag/Srinagar, May 18 (Scoop News) –Department of Excise, Kashmir Division has initiated poppy destruction drive in districts of Anantnag and Kulgam in South Kashmir here today.

In the drive, Narcotic Central Bureau, Department of Revenue and Police participated. The team destroyed illicit cultivated as well as wild poppy in the Valley of Panzath, Lowdora, Sadoora, Fetehpora, Wanpora in Tehsil Duroo and in Crendigam of Tehsil Bijbehara besides in the Valley of Gowsia Colony, Nayanpora, Reshipora, Dohbi Khai, Zirayat Galli Laroo, Kindipora and Chehlan of district Kulgam.

The people of the areas were also made aware not to grow the said crop as the offence is punishable under Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act and anybody found involved in such cultivation shall have to face consequences under the provision of such Act.

Meanwhile a meeting with regard to the National Population Register (NPR) was today held under the chairmanship of District Development Commissioner, Anantnag, Dr. Farooq Ahmad Lone.

Joint Director of Census Operations J&K while making the agencies aware about the preparation of NPR told the meeting that unique Aadhaar Card will be issued after verification is a time bound activity and thus needs to be implemented without delay.

Tehsildars and Executive Officers of Municipal Committees were asked to submit the list of enumerators for completing the 2nd phase of the census successfully.

He further informed that VLW and ward officers shall be involved in Rural and Urban areas. The resident missing in first round will be issued notices to come at the 2ndphase for the preparation of data information. Permanent data base centre shall also be setup at every tehsil.

He further told that preparation of NPR will help the deserved people under various beneficiaries’ schemes and programmes, which will improve planning expenditure development.

The Anganwari Workers, Asha Workers and Panch and Sarpanchs shall also be involved in awareness camps to inform the locals at village level.

All the District Officers and Executive Officers of Municipalities also participated in the meeting.

JK CM demands Leh type package for earth quake sufferers

New Delhi,May 18 (Scoop News) –Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah Saturday afternoon met Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh here and discussed various matters pertaining to the peace and development in the State.

The focus of the discussion was recent earth quake which hit various parts of districts of Doda, Kishtwar and Ramban. The Chief Minister while giving resume of the damages caused by the quake to the large number of public and private property including essential public service infrastructure demanded the package of relief for the affected people on the pattern, the Union Government had sanctioned for Leh cloud burst survivors.

Highlighting the need for such a type of relief, Omar Abdullah said that the earth quake sufferers of erstwhile Doda district which include Bhaderwah, Kishtwar and Ramban deserve this package for the backwardness of the area and poorer economic status of the people.

Kashmir Folk Festival at Pahalgam

Srinagar, May 18 (Scoop News) –As a part of the ongoing 2-month long Kashmir Folk Festival, a colourful cultural programme was held today at Pahalgam, the famous South Kashmir tourist resort, with prominent folk artists performing before an enthusiastic audience.

Based on the folk music and folk dance of Kashmir, the programme presented the rich cultural heritage of Kashmir before the domestic and local tourists visiting the area. The performance was thronged by a lot of audience who appreciated the cultural initiative.

J&K Academy of Art, Culture and Languages and the Department of Culture, J&K Government have taken the maiden initiative to celebrate the folk culture of Kashmir through its artistic performance by the folk artists. Various cultural items like Bhand Peather, Dhambhali, Cchakri with a mix of ghazals and light music are being performed at various tourist resorts in Kashmir. The programme started on May 4 and will conclude on July 9, 2013.

Meanwhile, the cultural exhibition arranged by the Academy at the Kashmir Haat has become a favourite site with the visitors of the exhibition. The exhibition presents traditional costumes, calligraphy specimen, traditional jewelry, the photographs and blow ups, depicting the rich cultural heritage of the state. The exhibition has especially become popular with budding generation of the Kashmir who take it as an opportunity to get a peep into the rich folk traditions of Kashmir. Many visitors who were keenly observing the folk performances appreciated the Academy initiative and urged to continue holding such events in future too.

The scientists in a key observatory of Hawaii reported that the level of carbon dioxide gas has beaten a nightmare landmark, reaching a strength not witnessed on this planet for millions of years.

James Butler of NOAA`s Earth System Research Laboratory calls it a" milestone" that points toward a repeated headway of swelling carbon dioxide. The UN climate change discussions have taken this trend seriously. Many climate researchers have regarded this threshold as unsafe

The instruments revealed that the carbon dioxide gas has crossed the level of 400ppm.The fact was revealed by the National Ocean and Atmospheric Administration.

The scientists consider the 400 ppm capped level of carbon unsafe.

In 800,000 years or 5 million years the carbon dioxide gas has crossed the limits in the atmosphere.

The UN climate change discussions have taken this trend seriously. Many climate researchers have regarded this threshold as unsafe.

Some climate scientists believe to push back the level to 350ppm for meeting the global goal of maintaining the average temperature in this century at 2degrees Celsius or 3.6 degrees Fahrenheit.

Although there are many observatories in the world, but the Mauna Loa Volcano on the island of Hawaii is the standard spot for recording the carbon dioxide levels.

At Mauna Loa two measuring gadgets recorded a Keeling Curve of carbon dioxide level at 400.03 ppm. The level of 400 ppm was recorded in many arctic observatories one year ago.

Scientists like Butler of Boulder, Colorado fear that if this process continues without control the average carbon dioxide level could surpass the 400 ppm within a year or more. During the last 800,000 years the carbon dioxide gas levels varied between 180 ppm and 280 ppm.

Butler said that the extensive use of coal and oil for the period of Industrial Revolution increased the level, of carbon dioxide to about 290 ppm by the close of the 19th century. However, the concentration rate recorded an exorbitant increase from 370 and 380 ppm in the 20th century.

The carbon dioxide released in the atmosphere remains trapped in it for hundreds of years and increasing greenhouse gas emission has added to its level.

Sajjan Kumar is guilty of 1984 Delhi killings: RP Singh

Jammu, May 18 (Scoop News) –Acquittal of Congress leader Sajjan Kumar in a 1984 anti-Sikh riots case related to the killing of innocent people and no action on April 1992 FIR lodged against him has invited widespread resentment and anger from the Sikh community across the country. The Congress has been continuously using political pressure during the last 29 years to shield Sajjan Kumar in particular. This was alleged by Jammu & Kashmir BJP Seh-Prabhari Sardar R.P. Singh while addressing a massive gathering of Sikh men and women, including youth and aged at Jammu on Saturday.

R.P.Singh said that Sajjan Kumar was being given the “benefit of doubt”, which is not justified as this Congressman was the prime accused in spreading a wave of terror among the Sikhs during 1984 and publically provoked the people to attack and kill Sikhs wherever they were seen. Our women, youth, old aged parents were given inhuman treatments, tortured and killed on the instigation of Sajjan Kumar. He said soon after the killings of Sikhs, various Commissions have been constituted from time to time and but unfortunately disbanded each time or their recommendations thrown into dustbins as most of them were of the view that Sajjan Kumar, Jagdish Tytler and H.K.L Bhagat were guilty of Delhi killings and needed to be punished.

R.P. Singh, while opposing the term riots, said that it was clear case of genocide as Sikhs were butchered on large scale for none of their crime and hence it cannot be called riots by any yardstick. It was a well planned conspiracy to wipe out Sikhs with the full patronage of the government and the local administration, including police. The Congress has been even using CBI and other investigating agencies to influence and get culprits go scot free, he added.

R.P. Singh said that the Constitution of India has laid stress on equality for every citizen before law but the same is not being honoured. Law is being twisted and misused to favour selected people despite of their open involvement in heinous crimes, which is against the spirit of the Constitution. He demanded that the Supreme Court should form Special Investigation Team (SIT) to look into and investigate the complete genocide, that of 72 police officers who as per Kapur Mittal Commission were identified to be involved in genocide. He appealed to the masses of Jammu and Kashmir and especially the Sikhs to send signed petition to the President of India with a demand for filing immediate challan against Sajjan Kumar on April 1992 FIR.

This day long programme was also addressed by BJP State General Secretaries Kavinder Gupta and Bali Bhagat, senior leaders S. Varinderjit Singh, Charanjit Singh Khalsa, S. Amreek Singh and Gurdyal Singh Bali.

Academy felicitates National Awardees

Jammu, May 17 (Scoop News) –J&K Cultural Academy today felicitated Dr S P Srivats, S Pritpal Singh Betab and Dr Aruna Sharma for their contribution in the field of literature and also in view of the national awards “Hindita Bhashi, Lekhak Purskar 2010 conferred on them by Central Hindi Directorate, Ministry of Human Resource Development Department of Higher Education, New Delhi.

Dr Satyapal Shrivats was chosen for the award for his translation work titled “Boond Boond Smritiyan” while S Pritpal Singh Betab has been awarded for translating his own anthology of Urdu gazals titled “Shehar-e-Gazal in Hindi. Dr Aruna Sharma was honoured for her poetry book “Prthvian”.

Additional Secretary Jammu, Savita Bakshi congratulated them for their splendid work which have brought laurels to the state . She assured the gathering that academy is making all efforts to promote culture and literature in state and will ensure support to highlight the litterateurs of the state .

Dr Ved Kumari Ghai a senior litterateur and social activist presided over the function. In her presidential address, she congratulated the award winners and also appreciated the role of the academy in recognising the contribution of the writers.

On this occasion, B B Sharma read paper on Dr Satyal Pal Shrivats, whereas contributions of S Pritpal Singh Betab was highlighted in the paper read out by Sunil Sharma. Neeru Sharma threw light on the life and works of Dr Aruna Sharma. Academy, while felicitating them presented a memento a shawl and a citation.

Proceedings of the programme were conducted by Azra Choudhary, Editor Hindi and vote of thanks was presented by Neeru Sharma who is Chief Editor in the Dictionary Department of the Academy.

Vohra asks J&K Universities to forge mutually beneficial collaborations

Srinagar, May 17 (Scoop News) –The Forum of Vice Chancellors of various Universities of Jammu and Kashmir, which is presently chaired by Dr. Tej Partap, Vice Chancellor, Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology, Kashmir, met N. N. Vohra, Governor, at Raj Bhavan, here this evening to felicitate him on his extended involvement with the affairs of Jammu and Kashmir.

The Vice Chancellors thanked the Governor for his sustained guidance and support in the past 5 years and for taking keen interest in the development of all the Universities in the State for the promotion of quality education and research. They expressed sincere hope that his continuing support to the varsities would go a long way in promoting the cause of higher education and development of centres of excellence.

This would be a historical occasion for the State and the Governor urged all the Vice Chancellors to support the successful organization of this mega science event which will involve the participation of several hundred of the top most scientists from within and outside the country, including at least 5 Nobel laureates who would participate in the Indian Science Congress. This is the first ever time in 110 years that the Indian Science Congress would be held in Jammu & Kashmir.

During the discussions, the Governor re-iterated the importance of the varsities entering into effective mutually beneficial collaborations in the arenas of teaching, research, libraries, extension projects, sports, cultural activities, sharing infrastructure and exchange of students and faculty with the larger objective of improving quality of higher education and securing speedy economic development of the State.

The issues which were discussed during the meeting included, interalia, the need for equipping the students with the required knowledge and skills in consonance with the emerging job market requirements worldwide, selections of faculty, admission processes, examination systems, timely declaration of results, availability of resources etc.

Ladakh Renewable Energy awarded “Excellence Award” by Renewtech India

Leh (Ladakh), May 17 (Scoop News) –The Ladakh Renewable Energy Development Agency (LREDA) has been awarded the Renewtech India Excellence Award 2013 for Commendable Performance and in the Renewable Energy Sector on Thuresday at the inaugural function of the 6th edition of Renewtech India 2013 International Expo and Summit being held at Chinchwad, Pune. On behalf of LREDA, Reuben Gergan, Sr. Project Engineer, LREDA received the award from Deepak Gupta, former secretary, MNRE. In addition, Arif Kakpori and Stanzin Choster also represented LREDA on the occasion. The state nodal agencies of Chattisgarh, Gujarat, Maharashtra and Kargil were also presented awards at the function. The jury for the awards, comprising of former secretary, Ministry of Power, R.V Shahi, and former secretaries, MNRE, Deepak Gupta, Girish Pradhan selected the mentioned agencies from the base of all nodal agencies in the country.

Deepak Gupta congratulated the agency and Project Director (LREDA), Jigmet Takpa for the playing an important role in off-grid renewable energy projects and commended the commitment and effort of LREDA in implementing the Ladakh Renewable Energy Initiative Project, a flagship programme of the Government of India in off-grid renewable energy development which has also been deemed to be the largest project of its kind in the world.

The Renewtech India 2013 conference and exhibition set-up with the support of the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), Government of India, Solar Energy Society of India, Wind Energy Association of India and World Bio Energy Association, was inaugurated by Dato Paduka Haji Sidek Ali, the High Commissioner of Brunei Darussalam, Richard Bale, Consul General of Canada, Deepak Gupta and Ashvin Kumar, Director of the Solar Energy Corporation of India.

The two-day conference and three-day exhibition, currently in progress is focusing on 'How to achieve additional 30,000 MW Renewable Energy Capacity during the 12th Five Year Plan'. Top officials from the government, various renewable energy-related Public Sector Undertaking (PSUs) as well as international power experts have contributed to the discussions about the existing scenario in the renewable energy sector. LREDA also presented the commitment of LAHDC in supporting renewable energy growth and shared the unique ways of implementation by which renewable energy can meet demands in the remotest areas of India. PDP relieved at Liyaqat's bail

Srinagar, May 17 (Scoop News) –Expressing relief at the grant of bail to Liyaqat Shah by a court in New Delhi, Peoples Democratic Party(PDP) today said it is now obvious that the charges slapped against him by Delhi Police were not true as pointed out at the time of his arrest. A spokesman of the party said while the final verdict of the court is still to come, the relief granted to Liyaqat has raised hopes of a fair trial for him.

The spokesman said Liyaqatat's case should lead to focussing on the plight of numerous young people from Kashmir who are languishing in different jails of the country including Delhi's Tihar prison. He said the news report that 15 Kashmiri prisoners had been dumped into a small 8+8 cell in Tihar jail is a cause of deep concern and worry. "The PDP reiterates its demand for a white paper on the status of all prisoners in various jails of the country and providing legal assistance to those among them who can't afford it" the spokesman said.

Referring to recent acquittal of some Kashmiri youth accused of terrorist activities, the spokesman said it is unfortunate that Muslims in general and Kashmiris in particular are viewed with suspicion. He said many lives have been destroyed by malicious arrest and prosecution of innocents and there is need to end this victimization n on patently religious grounds. People from Kashmir and Muslims from elsewhere are not able easily to get accommodation and are the first targets of police whenever a terror incident takes place, said the spokesman. He said such an attitude is unfortunately pushing Muslim youth to alienation and extremism and the vicious cycle of brutalities on innocents continues unabated.

The spokesman said the rehabilitation policy for the people who crossed the LOC needs to be revisited in view of the loopholes that came into notice after Liyaqat fiasco. He said the policy needs to be streamlined to ensure hassle free return of our youth and their purposeful rehabilitation. "At present the returning militants who had gone as young people and are now middle aged persons with families are facing immense problems in absence of a proper rehabilitation that should include their sustenance, schooling of their children, benefits of citizenship like ration cards, passports etc and the nationality issues of their spouses" he added.
