It is easy to make someone else the scapegoat for your ills and discomfort. However, is a company, institution, or organization causing your problems? Most people today point the finger to others as being responsible for their disappointments, troubles, or complaints. I recently saw this in an article about Wal-mart. There were many valid points that people need to know about this store. Yes, some of their practices are not ethical, just, or decent. However, making another the fall guy for all the woes of society is not realistic or right for the lack of responsibility that each person needs to take as a mature person.
The following quote is from an article on the internet this week from Truthout and is titled, “Wal-Mart Is Not the Bargain You Might Think” Maura Stephens. It states, “If that’s not bad enough, another recent study concluded that Wal-Mart makes us fat. “ An additional supercenter per 100,000 residents increases … the obesity rate by 2.3 percentage points. … These results imply that the proliferation of Wal-Mart supercenters explains 10.5 percent of the rise in obesity since the late 1980s.”
I agree with many comments about worker rights and profits, however, are they responsible for peoples’ weight? This does not make sense. No one makes a person eat anything. A person is responsible for the food they put into their mouths. If they eat foods with sugar, fat, or carbohydrates, it is from a personal and individual decision. They can eat food purchased from any establishment whether a grocery store, fast food eatery, or a family restaurant.
It is possible that the person is eating to cover their feelings and stuff their emotional abuse and trauma. A store has nothing to do with why they are eating. That a person chooses to overeat could actually be an addiction. Addiction to food is the elephant in the living room about which no one wants to talk. Addiction, stuffs feelings, no matter what the means. In addition to drugs, prescription drugs, pot and other toxic substances, food, sugar, or sugary drinks as pop and energy drinks are ways to stop fear based, scary emotions from being expressed. This is a common way not to face reality. Usually heavy or obese people have been through incest, sexual abuse, or other tragic events they cannot face. As a counselor, I understand that weight is only a symptom of a deeper problem. This problem is a life problem and never was brought on by a store.
The other issue is people work where they feel emotionally accepted. Wal-mart offers employment to people who believe they are worthless, victims, or have little self-esteem. This creates a mentality to complain about “poor me” and do nothing to improve their own personal responsibility to learn trades, get an education, or becoming an apprentice to a job that would pay the equivalent of their self-value. In life, we attract what we are.
People need to take responsibility for their lives and not blames stores, institutions, medicines, or society for their dilemmas. An employee can stay an injured party and gripe or grow up and become mature. We create our lives and reality. People have a choice to move beyond or stay stuck. Wal-mart offers a choice to outgrow the scarcity perception where you look to other to save you, fix you, or take care of you, and make you happy. Increasing your self-respect encourages a person to find a position that better fits who you think you are.
I created a new life of happiness, prosperity, and self-love. I moved beyond, “Poor me” and victim from nine addictions, mental illness, domestic violence, PTSD, arthritis, incest, suicide, and more. I created a business, where I am no longer the victim desperately working for an institution that uses me. Today, I am a happy, whole individual, grateful to be alive and enjoy love in my life.
