It’s all about money nowadays on the Internet. The last free media has been taken over by the power of money. Last example of this ugly mutation: Egyptian billionaire Naguib Sawiris, who has shut down several websites and blogs because he did not like what was in there!!!
Once upon a time, the Web was a free zone where any citizen was able to share with the world his points of view and angers. These happy times are gone…
Naguib Sawiris is only the last example of raising Internet censorship. The Egyptian businessman has proven the world that freedom of speech on the Internet is now a mockery.
Last week, the controversial billionaire, a good friend of Egyptian dictator Hosni Moubarak, has shut two blogs down after they published posts reminding bribery scandals Sawiris was involved in.
What does this whole story mean? That anyone one who has enough money to hire an army of lawyers can now decide what is going to be published on him. That people like Sawiris will only accept positive information to appear on the Web.
Where is the freedom of speech in all that? Where is simply the freedom to inform? There is no reason for a man involved in pending and past controversies to have his reputation washed out because his legal advisors have put pressure over hosting sites or servers.
