In regards to Blackwater, the private security firm is in hot water for the killings that have taken place on September 16, 2007. So far, five of the Blackwater guards are facing charges on manslaughter and weapons. But, a sixth person has also pleaded guilty to the charges. This is in regards to the death of fourteen Iraqi civilians.
As a result, there is an investigation. During one interview, a man said that he saw his wife and son get killed in the crossfire. Police officers and other civilians backed up the man’s testimony. Because of this, there was much outcry. There were demands for those guards to stand trial.
Blackwater could possibly lose its license to operate in Iraq. However, it poses a problem for US President-Elect Barack Obama once he takes the US Presidency on January 20, 2009. It will be up to Obama and his administration to deal with the security situation. More work will be put on Senator Hillary Clinton of New York, if and when she takes up the post. For the time being, Clinton will remain in the US Senate.
On a side note, it has been revealed that Blackwater is a donor to the Clinton Foundation. This could spell a possible conflict of interest in regards to the Obama administration. But, some new evidence has come into light.
Radio logs from Blackwater came in. According to the radio logs, the Blackwater guards were provoked. Currently, the prosecution is looking over the radio logs. It would make it harder for the prosecution to go after Blackwater. Possibly, it will possibly affect the outcome on whether or not Blackwater will keep its license to operate in Iraq. But the logs give information that may turn the tides of the case in favor to Blackwater.
“The Justice Department began their presentation to the American people with a lie,” said Blackwater defense attorney Thomas Connolly. These logs could become new and powerful evidence to the case. However prosecutor Patrick Rowan has a differing opinion.
