Rachel Sterne is Chief Digital Officer for the City of New York. Her focus is serving New Yorkers with digital media, streamlining internal coordination, and supporting public-private partnerships with technology leaders.
Prior to this role, Rachel was Founder and CEO of GroundReport, a global citizen news platform that empowers journalists to publish original, intelligent reporting to an audience of millions. She founded GroundReport in 2006 with the mission to democratize the media and help the world share its stories.
Prior to founding GroundReport, Rachel was as a Political Intern at the UN Security Council for the US Mission to the United Nations. Her experience observing the UN during the Darfur crisis inspired her to launch GroundReport as a tool that enables global citizens to share on-the-ground information and insight, and discover what's really going on in the world. Rachel graduated magna cum laude from New York University as a Presidential Honors Scholar.
She is also an Adjunct Professor at Columbia Business School, specializing in social media and entrepreneurship. In 2009 Rachel was named one of America's Most Promising Social Entrepreneurs by BusinessWeek, and in 2010 she served as an American Democracy Institute fellow.
