Here are a few suggestions for some new sports to be included in the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver/Whistler. These new sports will ensure that
The Bertuzzi Biathlon.
This new sport is named in honour of one of
Cross-country curling.
This new event will combine the thrills of curling with the unpredictability of cross-country skiing. Over the course of five kilometers, with eight sharp angles included in it, the curlers must take as few shots as possible to complete the course successfully. Accuracy over distances of 500 – 750 metres will be paramount, as all of the eight angles will have run-offs behind them, to ensure that stones with too much weight will be severely penalized. It is anticipated that the sweepers for this event could well be speed-skaters with brooms.
Cross-country 3 woman luge.
This new event will combine the excitement of the luge and the strength of uphill cross-country skiing. The three women will have to fit onto the luge together in the downhill sections and then combine their arm strength to move the luge, with them still sitting on it, up the tough uphill sections. This will favour the woman who takes part in dragon-boating, canoeing, or kayaking during the summer months. These races will be run over 5km, 10km, and 15km.
Curling pool.
This rock ’em, sock ’em game will add to the lure of curling. It combines the precision of curling with the skills of pool to make an event that everyone will be able to appreciate. On the same curling rink as now and over the same distance, the curling poolers will aim to sink their stones into one of the six ice pockets that will be cut into the edge at each end of the curling rink. There will be three holes on each side, worth one, two, and three points, depending on which hole the stone flies into. The nearer the hole to the curler, the more difficult it will be to sink a stone, so the higher the number of points awarded will be. Curlers will have to bounce their stones into pockets via at least one other stone for the pocketed stone to count.
Snow-shoe Snowball.
This new event will combine the stamina required to snowshoe 10km over hilly terrain, with the accuracy of a marksman. During the snow-shoe, the participant will have to knock over 10 bottles of Budweiser beer with snowballs that they make themselves. The snowballing will take place at two kilometre intervals, with the bottles at a distance of 10m away from the thrower at the first throwing area, progressing by 5m intervals, until the bottles at the finale are 30m away! This should produce lots of interest and crowd participation. Snow-shoers must not throw snowballs at each other. It should be noted that the bottles of beer could be Coors Lite, if they are willing to pay more than Budweiser for the privilege of having their product advertised in such a manner.
Cross-country snow-shoe and ice-fishing.
