Chairman Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), Dr. J.S. Sarma has urged upon the Telecom operators of various companies operating in the J&K for providing cent percent mobile service coverage to the people. He also stressed for monitoring quality of mobile services to the subscribers keeping in view the topography and the difficult terrain of the border state.
Dr. Sarma stated this while reviewing the status of mobile and broadband network services in the state here today.
Commissioner Municipal Corporation and Director Information, Khawja Farooq Ahmad Renzu, Principal Advisor TRAI,. Sudhir Gupta, Chief General Manager, J&K BSNL,. N. N. Gupta, Representative of Cellular Operators Association of India, T.R. Dua and representatives of Private Telecom Companies of Airtel, Aircel, Reliance, Vodafone and Tata Indicom attended the meeting.
The Chairman said providing of quality mobile service to the people is vital to improve the economy of the state. He said that all necessary steps should be taken to expedite the expansion of mobile and landline services in the state. He said preference need to be given to those areas which are still uncovered by the telecom services. He asked the telecom operators to expedite their services and ensure improved mobile services to the people and assured that all possible logical support would be extended to them for providing quality services to the people. He also emphasized for fixing the year wise plans for expanding the mobile connectivity to the left out hilly and remote areas of the state.
During his deliberations, Director Information emphasized the need that towers, which are erected by various telecom Operators should be installed in a such way that the environment of the particular place is not disturbed. He brought to the notice of Chairman, TRAI that BSNL and other telecom agencies be asked to get proper permission for erection of towers in different parts of the state as per the relevant rules.
Chairman appreciated the points raised by Director Information and advised all telecom agencies to ensure the adherence of local laws while installing mobile towers and other related infrastructure.
While reviewing the functioning of various telecom companies in the state, the meeting was informed that over 40 lakh subscribers of the state have been covered under mobile services network and out of total of 6417 villages, 4977 villages have been covered under the service through various telecom agencies so far.
The representatives of the companies assured the Chairman that they would take all necessary initiatives to cover the remaining areas of the state under mobile services and upgrade its infrastructure for providing best services to its subscribers.
The telecom operators also raised some points in accelerating their services which also include approval for providing roaming services in prepaid connections, approval for Black Berry to postpaid subscribers, permission for installing towers within 10 km in border areas and providing mobile service facilities in the areas of Dal, Negeen and khushalsar.
The chairman gave a patient hearing to the demands putforth and assured that necessary steps would be taken to solve these problems after proper examination. He also assured that the left out areas will also be brought under the purview of telecom services.
