The man police captured in connection with the murder of 19-year-old Kevin Pravia in New York City last weekend has confessed to suffocating Pravia to death in his apartment and stealing from him.
Jeromie Cancel, 22, was apprehended almost by accident when he confessed to the crime while being questioned by police regarding an unrelated crime. Apparently Kevin Pravia approached Jeromie Cancel in Union Square Park in Manhattan, drunk and looking to buy drugs, at around 6 a.m. on Saturday morning. The two went to Pravia’s apartment where Pravia fell asleep. Seeing the opportunity to rob the 19-year-old Pace University student, Jeromie Cancel stuffed a plastic bag in Pravia’s mouth and strangled him with an electrical cord. Before making off with his victim’s laptop, ipod and cell phone, however, Cancel said he watched the horror movie "Saw" as Pravia lay dying or dead.
Jeromie Cancel is charged with first and second-degree murder for killing Kevin Pravia. They do not have any motive for the killing; Cancel said to reporters that he killed Pravia because "he wanted to." Some wonder if the killing was a gay hate crime seeing as Pravia was openly homosexual.
