Yesterday at the Church Avenue subway station in Brooklyn, I walked up a flight of stairs. Directly in front of me was a Chinese woman, about my age — late 50s. She had a singular way of walking: swinging her arms from side to side as she avidly mounted the steps. She looked like Popeye dancing a jig.
Did her physical therapist prescribe this exercise? Is it an ancient Chinese mystical charm? A pure whim?
I suspect I’ll never know.
