A Documentary on Tamil writer, Jayakanthan is to be released on April, 24 th, 2008.It is the brainchild of music maestro Ilayaraja.Writer Jayakanthan and Ilayaraja, though both of them had their roots in the communist movement, both of them have now traveled far away from it.But the bonding that developed during the 1960s has resulted in a documentary on writer Jayakanthan, with the title, ‘Yellakalai Vistharitha Yezhuthukalaignan’, meaning ‘A writer who has widened the horizons’.
The documentary is of 90 minute,to be released on his 75 th birth day, of the writer Jayakanthan, on April, 24 th.In those days, when Ilayaraja used to perform on communist platform, while Jayakanthan was a star speaker.
Mr.Ravisubramanian is the director of the film, who has already made two documentaries, one on writer Indira Parthasarathi and another on writer Ma.Aranganathan.
Throughout the film, Mr.Jayakanthan, a winner of the Sakitya Akademy and Jnanpith Awards and also the first Rajaraja Cholan award conferred by the Tanjore Tamil University, lives up to his reputation as a no-nonsense man speaking his mind and contradicting the views he once vociferously articulated. He joined the communist party because he has seen them. And who has never made a secret of his hatred for the Dravidian movement. But he also cherishes his friendship with Kalaignar, as ‘nada natpu’, meaning a friendship without any expectation.
It is interesting and enchanting to watch Jayakanthanmake pungent comments, softened only by the soulful music of Ilayaraja. Writer Jayakanthan answers Ravisubramanian’s questions on communism, spiritualism, God, globalization, writers, criticism of his works and a variety of other subjects. He is a person being a communists, who supports globalization and capitalism and according to him, today’s capitalists cannot be compared with those of 17 th and 18 th centuries.
The documentary film also offers rare glimpses of the writer’s varied interests. He visits temples. He has faith in God.He enjoys music and sings. He even learnt Veena but he could not continue the practice.Known as JK among his friends and comrades also adds colour to the film.
No doubt the documentary is going to be one of the best narration of the living legendary writer,K.Jayakanthan.
