What does Christmas mean in your mind? A sumptuous meal or a luxurious party? Or a time for you to contemplate what mistakes you have made over the past year? People in Hong Kong celebrated Christmas ‘unprecedentedly’ on 24th. They congregated in Lan Kuai Fong and had a extravaganza.
There were Santa Claus going everywhere, giving out little prizes for both adult and children. You may perceive it as a way of people enjoying themselves and there is nothing wrong with it. However, I feel it too extreme and commercialized. A countdown to Christmas was held also. We often have countdowns on New Year’s Eve, but this year, countdown was even held on Christmas eve, when all of us, even non-Christians, should be having a time of relaxing and contemplating.
Remember the news about Beckham having a leftover on Christmas? He showed us not only the commiseration for impoverished people, but also the meaning and aim for having a Christmas.
This year, I didn’t receive many presents, one reason being I didn’t visit that many friends and relatives, another being I am becoming to know the meaning behind Christmas.
I felt very happy and meaningful to have gone to a midnight mass this Christmas. I found the people in Hong Kong, and in churches, easier to make acquaintance. I can see amiable and cordial faces everywhere, either talking to each other in great manner or trying to find out a way to make a bit of more spaces for another people to have a seat, since the church is really filled up with people.
The true meaning which I discern in this mass or this Christmas is that, Christmas is a time for us to think of the people in need and show our sympathy by donating money to them or in other ways. Jesus Christ came to Earth to save and cleanse our soul, so human, who is sinful, can follow him and the road leading to heaven. He saved us and prevented us from having to be fraught with pain.
When it’s Christmas, people exchange gifts to each others. God gave us Jesus to come to Earth to cleanse our soul and lead us to heaven, so what should we give him in return? We should emulate the goodness of God and help the poor people.
Materialistic enjoyment, like a supper or a new electronic item may be really exhilarating and makes you happy. But will this happiness last long? Though if you help other people in need, they will be really grateful to you and the gratitude will stay in your heart, forever.
