Jammu, April 28 (Scoop News)- Smt Sheela Devi,mother of Aaj Tak Bureau Chief (J&K) Ashwani Kumar, died after prolonged illness in a private hospital in New Delhi on Monday.She was 75.
Sheela Devi, wife of retired Superintendent of Police Onkar Nath Chandra, was actively involved in social service till her last breadth.
Worried over the plight of women in private sector Sheela Devi had independently set up Damodar Satri Udyog Sanstha (DSUS) to empower more and more women in the society.
Under the banner of the DSUS, a Non Government Organisation, Sheela Devi worked hard to organise them in self help groups and imparted them basic education about their general hygiene.
Few years ago she along with her daughter in law Sunita Chandra initiated another path breaking step under PROJECT PAHL where they imparted free education to children of lower strata of society especially street children,rag pickers and children of casual labourers belonging to different states of India.
Sheela Devi’s death has been condoled by senior journalists and people from different walks of life.
She is survived by Dr Shiv Kumar,Additional Director, DRDO, Delhi and three daughters Vijay Zadoo, Dr Girja Sharma and Sushma Handoo.
The cremation ceremony is scheduled to take place at Bhagwati Nagar,Cremation Ground on Tuesday,April 29, 2014 at 4.00 p.m.
