The suicide bomber was killed in the al Shaar district of Syria’s largest city which has seen increasing street protests against President Bashar al-Assad and rising levels of bloodshed after months of relative calm. According to one police official the bomb could have killed 500 people.
The bloodied body of the van driver lay crumpled in the front seat, behind a windscreen riddled with bullet holes.
Officials told the U.N. observers the driver, who he said was "not Syrian", was shot before he could detonate the bombs.
“The attempted bombing has all the hallmarks of Al-Qaeda link group in Syria, which is trying to oust President Assad and undermine Kofi Annan peace initiative”, says one US intelligence analyst, speaking on the condition of anonymity (see: Al Jazeera shows Al Qaeda Fighters fighting the Syrian Army in Syria 16-12-2011 http://www.youtube.com/
The attack look like it was specifically aimed at the peaceful demonstrators, further evidence of al-Qaeda’s nefarious intent in Syria.
It is well known that Al-Qaeda has infiltrated the Syria opposition and has been conducting suicide and bombing attacks.
