The future of abortion rights is a pretty touchy subject for both the Republicans and the Democrats. Because there are pro-choice people in the Democratic and Republican party. At the same time there are pro-life people both parties as well. I have plenty of friends whom are pro-life advocates and at the same time are Democrats. The main reason abortion is a hot topic issue is due to religion. The right to an abortion and a right to life is a touchy subject of the sorts. In the many denominations under Christianity, they consider a fetus to be a living thing.
This also goes along the lines of stemcell research where they take the stemcells from embryos and use them to create new cells. But many of the Christian faith believe an embryo is a living thing. However, there are other faiths that beg to differ. This was the platform that won George W. Bush the United States Presidency in 2004. Many women’s rights groups support abortion right which is understandable. Making abortion illegal does really make the victims seem to be less than garbage.
There are many factors that the government and anti-abortion activists do not put into consideration.
One of them is what would happen to the female’s life let alone her health? It might have to be aborted to save the woman’s life. If it’s not, then both of them are going to die. Either way, the fetus is going to die. They people who push for anti-abortion legislation do not seem to put the woman’s needs and rights in the way.
What if the pregnancy was a product of rape? Rape is a very traumatic experience and not many people seem to recovery because they don’t want to confront it. They brush off as a bad experience which constitutes to avoidant coping by avoiding it. I have learned that by avoiding things that need to be addressed in turn will make things far worse in the future. The child as a result of rape can mess a woman up for the rest of her life. There have been cases that has happened.
I remember talking to a friend about this not long ago. At first he was okay with termination of pregnancy if it was a result of rape. But he has a good friend who had revealed to him that she was a product of a rape. That was pretty conflicting. It very much changed his whole opinion on the sorts. At the same time, it just blew my mind. There are plenty of people in this world whom are products of rape.
Being a Vietnamese-American citizen, I should know about that. During the Vietnam War, women were raped by both U.S., Vietcong, and NVA soldiers. There are plenty of pregnancies that were a result of those rapes.
In Virginia, there was a type of legislation to be passed that made abortion of any kind illegal. But if it was by rape, they would have to take an emergency contraceptive in seventy-two hours. I found this to be pretty stupid. Having taken plenty of sociology and communication classes in the last few years, passing a law like that is going to scare the victims even more. You can’t just force them to come out and say they got raped. That’s a Pandora’s box that shouldn’t be messed with. But the law wasn’t passed and the person that proposed that was voted out of office.
What if the rape was an incest rape? That would mess anybody up?
Making abortion illegal because it says so in the Bible very much violates the Separation of Church and State. It’s basically saying that Christianity is the absolute faith in the world let alone the United States. I’m myself am not a Christian. I was born and raised a Buddhist.
We have our own views towards abortion. We’re a faith about logic and philosophy. In a sense, it’s not murder if the fetus isn’t showing any brainwaves. In the part of rape, it’s no different from placing the blame on the victim. Rapes tend to happen when a man or woman least expects it. Nothing can prepare a person for rape.
How can one be responsible for the actions of another person? There is a high amount of rape in the United States. For the Christians that say abortion is immoral, how do they know those words come from God? How do we know that the Bible came directly from God?
The issue of abortion rights seems to be an issue at the same time as an excuse for people to force their faith and beliefs on other people. That’s something I very much do not appreciate. I’m Buddhist and I don’t go forcing my beliefs and views on other people.
Ultimately, it’ll be between Federal Law and State Law. At the same time, it feels like a conflict of faiths. Abortion rights goes along the lines of with faith is right and which faith is wrong. Religion has no place in the government. Making abortion illegal because it’s deemed a sin in the various Christian denominations is no different than trying to merge church and state together.
This country wasn’t founded on Christianity let alone Protestantism. The same crowd that says abortion is a sin are pretty much the same that believe in Adam and Eve along with other forms of intelligent design. Practitioners of Christianity have their viewpoints towards abortion.
But what about the Muslims, Buddhists, Shintos, Sikhs, Jainists, Hindus, and so forth? It’s like saying that Christianity is "right" and all the other faiths are "wrong". Not only would making abortion rights illegal hurt women’s rights, it would be a slap to the face of people practicing faiths other than Christianity.
In reality, who knows what the future will be? There will be areas where abortion is legal and there will be areas where abortion is illegal. This will be one topic that will never go away.
