"Air Summer" or "Air In Summer" is a two episode series that serves as an interesting side-story to the anime called "Air" that runs for thirteen episodes. The series is a mix of comedy, dramna, romance, and the supernatural. The setting for the Air series let alone Air Summer looks to take place in Feudal Japan during the Edo Era because the characters brandish samurai katanas which is the symbol of a samurai. Their outfits and garbs also look to be a result of the Edo Era before almost everything was "westernized" under the Meiji Era. This is a brief side adventure of the Summer story arc in Air. This two episode series focuses more on what happened during the journey during the summer.
The series revolves around three characters: Kanna, Ryuuya, and Uraha. Air In Summer is directed by Tatsuya Ishihara and was broadcasted on the Japanese TV Network "BS-I." This story is adapted from the visual novels for the PC. They were sexually explicit visual novels so the games wouldn’t be for kids. When adapted into a series, everything was watered down and the graphic sexual content was removed. In short, when adapted into an anime series, it was made into something that is PG-friendly. So, Air in Summer is one series that just about everybody can watch. It’s very PG-friendly compared to the visual novel counterpart.
Air In Summer very much takes place in Feudal Japan. There is Kanna who is formally named as Kannabi no Mikoto. It is said that Kanna possesses some inherited power due to child birth. As a result, she has been kept in isolation. Her story revolves around the supernatural pretense of Air in Summer. It is revealed that her mother is a winged being let alone being the only one left.
She has a companion in Ryuuya who is a low-ranking samurai who is given the task to protect Kanna. Ryuuya is also the romantic interest of Kanna. But, he does play an important role in Kanna’s storyline.
The two are accompanied by Uraha who is one of many servants in charge of caring for Kanna. She has very magical abilities that prove to be invaluable. Together, the three of them embark on the journey which is the main driving force of Air Summer or Air In Summer.
There is a good amount of drama in this two episode series. It revolves around the main driving force of the Air series. Air In Summer has the interesting premise in which the three characters much travel around Japan to search for Kanna’s mother. It’s an interesting but comedic and tragic tale. But to understand Air In Summer, one must be familiar with the Air series. However, Air In Summer can be considered as a pseudo sequel.
It looks as if there’s an English-dubbed version of Air In Summer. But a series like Air or Air in Summer is something that is very difficult to find online or at an actual anime store. For fans of air, you may enjoy Air In Summer.
