"Tsuyokiss" is a comedy Japanese anime series spanning twelve episodes that looks to appeal to the female crowd. The series is "teen" rated as it was adapted from a visual novel genre videogame for both the PC and the Playstation 2. It’s not uncommon for popular Japanese computer games to be adapted into limited anime series. While most of the visual novel games are sexually explicit in most cases; the series are watered down when adapted into anime with just about all of the sexual and other adult content taken out. It’s about the same case with Tsuyokiss as it’s been made to appeal to everybody. So the series cannot be classified as "hentai."
But the settings are different. In the game, Tsuyokiss revolves around a male student named Leo Tsushima. In the anime series, the main protagonist is a girl named Sunao Konoe who is a second year transfer to the school. Her mother is an actress that constantly moves from one place to another due to the job. Ever since she saw her mother act at a younger age, Sunao aspired to do the same thing. Her main passion is acting and drama. At the new school, Sunao is "crushed" see that the school as no drama club much to her disbelief. She looks to be crushed but it’s an act as she is now determined to start a drama club.
The story humorously revolves around Sunao as she is focused on starting a drama club. But she learns that starting a drama club is easier said than done. Sunao talks with the student council in hopes of starting a drama club up in the school. But the request is denied as the head of the student council claims that people tend to join clubs to hang out with friends. Then the head of the student council named Kinu Kanisawa says that she’ll think about it if Sunao shows her how fun a drama club can be. It is revealed the first time she went on stage, Sunao suffered from stage fright.
Leo from the games makes his appearance as the male protagonist. He serves on the student council and looks to be an ally of Sunao.
From there, Sunao has to put up a performance in front of the student council in the auditorium to show them the fun of drama. This is her one chance of starting the drama club. But one of the things stopping her is stage fright that she had as a child. It turns out that Sunao and Leo happen to know each other since childhood. But because of what happened to the set, Kinu revokes the request for the drama club. However, it doesn’t stop Sunao.
She learns that it’s more difficult than anticipated as the student council come up with all sorts of things and challenges. In turn, it makes things much harder for Sunao. Overall, it’s a humorous comedy with a good deal of romance. But, Tsuyokiss presents the humorous plotline of getting a drama club established in the school. However, it would look as Tsuyokiss isn’t for everybody as it’s a chick-flick oriented anime series. But, one could admire Sunao’s determination and resolve in trying to start up a drama club.
There are funny moments as the director of discipline who is also a student has permission to carry a katana with her at all times.
Most male viewers may not find Tsuyokiss appealing as it comes off as too "girly." But it’s best to watch the show with an open mind. This series is only available in Japan. No North American company has purchased the license yet which explains the reason that there is no English dubbed version at the moment. Chances are that the series might not have an official North American release.
It looks highly unlike that there will be an English dubbed version released to the United States. Asides from that, Tsuyokiss is one series that does have a good amount of comedic value.
