On this day in 1993,13 youth Indian National Congress had been killed in police firing during a Writers Building,the offices of the Bengal government seize led by Mamata Banarjee,then the state Youth Congress president.Due to major differences with senior leaders like SoumenMitra,she founded All India Trinamool Congress after breaking away from the Congress in 1997 and became a part of right wing BJP led National Democratic Alliance (NDA)..In 2009 general election,Mamata formed a formidable alliance with the Congress (her parent political party) to teach Marxits a lesson.The Trinamul Congress organises this annual event on July 21 at Esplanade to commemorate the killing of 13 Youth.The Trinamul Congress chief had announced after her civic poll triumph that July 21, martyrs’ day, would also be “celebrated as Victory Day”.But TMC leadaership has decided that after the train tragedy they are not going to observe victory day.Instead they will pay homage to those who were killed in the train tragedy and 13 youth Congress workers.Hundreds and thousands of TMC supporters joined the rally to pay tribute to those who were killed in the firing.
According to police version,on July 21, huge police force were deployed near Writers’ Buildings and Governor’s House(Raj Bhavan).Mamata Banarjee,was stopped near the Tea Board office by the police but the police could not control the large crowd that gathered on Mayo Road. The police asked the protesters to disperse but the protesters refused to listen the warning.Police then resorted to lathicharge and lobbed teargas shells.After that a police officer had ordered to open fire.
