BAY SHORE, N.Y. (GroundReport) – According to published reports, an Army sergeant and his girlfriend found a winning lottery ticket at a convenience store Monday. Keeping true to his army discipline, the sergeant turned the ticket in to police.
The owner of the winning lottery ticket, Mary Ann Doerrbecker, was a $2,500 winner with no idea her lucky ticket was missing.
Sgt. Edward Boniberger and Marnie Hall found the ticket at a 7-Eleven store, according to Suffolk County police.
When police located Doerrbecker, she did hadn’t realized she had dropped the ticket.
Boniberger was quoted as saying, ”There’s people out there who need it a lot more than I do,” reports AP.
Boniberger was stationed in Baghdad with the 1st Battalion, 69th Infantry, and returned to the U.S. in September 2005.
