To attract like-minded people to your online guild, you have to take the time to do the proper research. Guilds are mainly for online games such as mass multiplayer online role playing games or MMORPGs. You have to be very intelligent when forming up a guild for online play. In a sense, it’s like forming up any other type of group. What you want to do is learn the reason many groups are formed up.
Think about what type of online game(s) you want to create that guild for. That is achieved by researching the guilds currently in existence. These guilds have their ideals on what they stand for. That should give you the general idea of the type of guild you want to create. In short, your guild has to stand for something. That’s the core part of attracting like-minded players to your online guild. If people are looking for a guild with the same set of ideals as your guild, they will join. In short, decide what reasons you’re creating the guild for. If you do this for the wrong reasons, you’ll have problems finding members. In short, your guild is going to die out.
Still, screen all the prospective members. Make sure they’re not going to break any of the guild’s ideals. If they do, issue them a warning with a penalty. If they keep violating the guild’s ideals, you have no choice but to boot them out. You’re going to have to screen everybody that wants to join your guild. Get some references and so forth. If they’re bad gamers, do not let them join.
Once you got your guild formed up, talk to all of your online buddies. Get on your AOL Instant Messenger, MSN Messenger, Yahoo Messenger, ICQ, Paltalk, and so forth. People whom play online together do talk online with each other though these different messengers. Get your friends to spread the word about the guild that you had just formed. Be sure to explain to your friends about the ideals that your guild very much stands for. It saves time of screening potential members that want to join your guild.
Start your own forum. You can use something like Proboards or Invision Free. You can get a free account set with them. Then, you have your forum set up. If you know a thing or two about html coding, you can set up the skins, colors, and background for your guild forum. The importance of the message board is that it’s going to serve as a hub or nexus of the sort that allows members of the guild to communicate with each other. There is also the option of adding an online chat room in the process. That also allows guild members to talk to each other to discuss strategy and/or shoot the breeze.
As a hub of information regarding guild activities and as a means of communication, it’s imperative that you immediately set up your forum. You can’t administrate a forum alone if you end up getting a lot of people. Make sure you have other members of the guild as staff. But you’re going to have to pick staff members very carefully. In short, pick the people that you trust the most to help run the guild’s message board. Pick people who are fair and just. If staffers play sides, the guild’s board will die and the guild itself will die.
Once you got the guild and guild forum set up, the next part is looking for the members. Next is the advertising and the marketing. You will need to do a good job in regards to both advertising and marketing. The online games themselves will already have a slew of forums. That is one way of advertising your guild. You basically create a forum thread with your information and your ideals. Make sure that they have an application form. Do not just accept new members outright. If players do agree and believe in your ideals, then they will come if they want to join a group.
Come up with a name of your guild. A name is very important. It will take time to come up with a guild name. Do not use a name that is very redundant. Also, do not come up with some name that sounds ridiculously retarded. Having the wrong name tends to turn people off. One example I could use is my best friend’s cousin is studying to be a dentist. We were driving to this city to watch a Karate demonstration. On the way, we passed by this dental clinic called the "Tooth Caboose." My best friend commented if his cousin ever gives a name like that to his practice, he’s not going there. I added, "I’m not going there either regardless of how good of a dentist he is." Having a stupid name tends to repel people from every wanting to join.
Make sure you have a guild insignia as well. That will be the calling card of your guild. This is the same routine when picking a name for your guild. Make sure you pick an insignia that lives up to your guild’s ideals.
Also, it doesn’t hurt collaborating with other guilds. Perhaps some veteran players might be bored of the guilds they’re in and would be open to joining something fresh and new.
In short you have to come up with the guild name, the guild ideals, and the insignia. Afterwards, advertise! Get your guild’s name out there.
