Aung San Suu Kyi is a freedom fighter from Myanmar (formerly Burma) who is being detained for her crusade to restore freedom and democracy in her own country. She has been detained for almost 20 years and her health is failing.
Aung San Suu Kyi is a Nobel Peace Prize winner and is a democratically chosen leader of Myanmar. Her party won the election in 1990 but was not allowed to rule. The Military Junta instead arrested her and later detained for pursuing her political beliefs.
Myanmar is a member of Asean and considered to be the only country in the Asean region that is ruled by a Military Junta. Leaders of Myanmar have made commitments on many occasions that they will release Suu Kyi from detention but almost always they rerenged on their promise and instead extend her detention whenever the promised release date would expire.
Democratic leaders of the Asean have tried to put pressure on Myanmar, at times warning its military leaders of sanctions including expulsion from the Asean membership.
What bothers some leaders in the Asean region is the seeming indifference of America to help in the immediate release of Aung San Suu Kyi who is fighting for peace and freedom in her own country through non-violent means. People believe in the saying that "What America Wishes, America Gets". In this specific case though, America sleeps tight while Suu Kyi suffers a slow death in the hands of dictators.
It was reported earlier that Suu Kyi is very ill and may die soon because of malnutrition as she continues to reject food ration from her jailers.
