Bail Requested By Khmer Rouge’s Second In Command

On the grounds that he was not a flight risk, Nuon Chea requested bail. He faces charges on crimes against humanity. This hearing has been delayed from Monday. During the Khmer Rouge’s regime, Nuon Chea was the deputy to Pol Pot’s Khmer Rouge regime.

The regime was a four-year rule where over one million people are believed to have died as a result. It is believed that Nuon Chea was the driving force between the Khmer Rouge’s ideologies, along with being responsible for its most radical policies.

He is one of the five top Khmer Rouge officials who are charged by the genocide tribunal supported by the United Nations. Later this year, trials are expected to begin.

I have no desire to leave my beloved country,” Chea said. He added: “No-one is worried about my security.”

However, the decision from the court is not expected to be received for several days.

According to BBC, the tribunal has great symbolic value which gives survivors to have their say. Four of those survivors have been registered as civil parties. They have the right to address Nuon Chea in court.

But there are many difficulties both legal and financial. The Cambodian authorities had refused to register Noun Chea’s Dutch lawyer. On the financial side, the courts are running out of money.

Many fear that the leaders may never face justice. Around 1998, Pol Pot died.
