Bangladesh is a developing country. The communication system is getting bigger modern days. Moreover, from above all this Bangladesh is very rich with its culture and folk music. The folk music of Bangladesh can be described as an ancient music from the community of both religious and secular songs. Folk song in Bangladesh is natural and well expressed in style. In Bangladesh folk song is the combination of folk song, folk dance and folk tune. The voice and tune are also in the style of folk music.
There are several types of folk music in this country. Those are- Baul, Jaari, Shari, Bhatiyali, Bhawaia, Rakhain folk song, Kumilla’s folk song, Jatra, Shylet’s folk song and many others. The culture and the lifestyle of the different tribes have also influenced folk music. Tribes like the Santal, Garo, Hajong, Chakma, Manipuri, Tripuri, Marma etc. have interacted with ethnic Bengali culture and lifestyle over the years. The interaction has been clearly reflected in the richness of folk music. Folk songs may be sung individually or in chorus. Folk songs sung individually include Baul, Bhatiyali, murshidi, Marfati, while songs sung in chorus include kavigan, leto, alkap and gambhira.
Folk music naturally composed and transmitted orally in rural area and some districts, which is away from the Dhaka city. These ancient rules music can be sung in a group or individually. It is not necessary to practice these songs regularly. These are specially performed by illiterate or semi-literate persons. They sung and express themselves using their native language, dialect or simple tune from the instrument during performances.
Now days in Dhaka several folk song festivals are arranged by the society organization. These are very infotain program. Lots of information with well established performance can be seen in these types of festivals. It is like preserving the Bangladeshi traditional songs. Not everyone in Dhaka knows about other districts folk songs. For these people festival like on folk music helps a lot. I think this kind of festival carries some motivations. It helps to find out different folk songs source and spread it to all other places. Those folk songs, which are on the way of destroying, this festival will rescue and re-distribute them in future. New trend re-mix or rediscovery of those folk songs which have been found at past. People like the re-mix version a lot. These kinds of festivals sometimes organized in abroad or foreign countries. By this festival people from different countries came to know about our tradition and culture of Bangladesh. This liberal culture is spreading internationally with proper reputation. The singer or musician of folk songs is local people. Festivals like this always help them in society and globally. This people will be no pauperism. It would help to reduce pauperism in future. This is preserving the information for the future generation. It will help to make new generation educated and create awareness on their cultural importance.
From my observation, I have found these festivals are educative and entertaining. There is different group performing for different traditional purposes. Purposes are- to entertain the guest, to accept the rainy season, traditional water throwing game, songs for the angler, pray to Allah for rain, song against British rules, the songs during the race between boats, marriage purpose and songs related with life’s happiness and sadness. The stage decoration was simple with non-natural leaves and a non-natural house.
This festival is related with our countries economic, tradition and development. Those communities that are performing can bring reputation and wealth for Bangladesh. The performer can build up their capacity to spread their performance internationally. The artists are not giving only entertainment, on the other hand they are creating the way to earn money. For every folk society should get the facilities from our government. We should do festivals like this to preserve our countries valuable asset on folk. Folk songs are very useful for a culture. It provides cultural ethics as well as traditional way to entertain people. We mainly call them tribes. Tribes are the main part of our country. We should teach them about small entrepreneurship so they would be able to spread themselves locally and globally as well.
This festival gave me information about me folk culture now I can understand and make well known to others about our various folk songs from different part of our country.
