The holidays can be depressing and lonely for some people. But it doesn’t have to be. With an open-mind and a sense of adventure, you can beat the blues and have a nice time. If you don’t have friends or family close by to spend it with, here are some tips to help you keep busy during the holiday season.Check out events in your area. Some events are listed in newspapers as well as community bulletin boards. Colleges have listings of events on their bulletin boards as well as in their newspapers and newsletters.
Hang out… Malls tend to be very busy during the holidays. It is easy to get lost in a crowd. Go to a mall, window shop, buy a snack, and get lost in the havoc, people-watching. Enjoy the ambiance and activities. Malls have many activities during the holidays, such as fashion shows, dance shows, performances, Santa Claus, rides for kids, booths, and meeting celebrities promoting their products.
Volunteer… Do some volunteer work or charity work for YMCA, homeless shelters, animal shelters, convalescent homes, handicapped facilities, children programs, Goodwill, community centers, schools, etc. They are worse off than you might think you are. Helping others who are worse off will help you feel better about your life and your present situation. It can also help you put your life into perspective.
Enjoy… Go to a good movie, and if you are really that bored, see two movies in one day. Then, after the movie, drop by at a local coffee shop and relax with a snack. Some coffee shops have a band or singer on weekends to entertain customers. Enjoy your environment, the setting, and your snack, eating it slowly and savoring every bite. You might even make a new friend to hang out with during the holidays.
Work out… Go to the gym and work out all day. It will not only keep you busy, but it is also healthy for your mind, body and soul. Work out on the machines as well as take classes. Yoga, Pilates, Tai Chi, Aerobics, Kickboxing, Nia, Dance, etc, are some of the many classes that gyms nowadays offer for your enjoyment and health. The list increases every year about a new exercise craze, if you are tired of the one that you are currently doing.
Internet Entertainment… The internet has infinite possibilities. Dating sites, game sites, special interests sites, profile pages, websites, online jobs, sexual sites, business networking sites, hobbies sites, etc. Check out chatrooms. They are interesting, if you are open-minded. And, see what kind of characters you can run into inside a chatroom.
Performances… There are also nightclubs, bars, cafes, art galleries, museums, art centers, theaters, plays, musicals and dance performances. If you are not near a city, then go to a college or a mall. Schools and malls offer similar arts and culture events.
Jacuzzi… If you live in a home association, like in apartments, condos and townhouses, then take a walk in your neighborhood before enjoying your pool and jacuzzi. Some home associations even have their own gym. Swim some laps before relaxing in hot water. Jacuzzi’s lulling jets are meditative as they massage your back for an hour or so. Then, you will have a good night’s sleep after your warm shower.
Animals fill the home with love… If you like animals, adopt a homeless pet, whether a cat, dog, another animal, or maybe, one of each. Animals can be very therapeutic for people who are alone. They are very intuitive and they sense your needs. They can brighten up your life and bring love into your home, warming up a cold, dark and lonely home.
Congregate… Religious institutions have events in their establishments. Whether fund-raisers, charities, Christmas and Easter plays, shows, musicals or mixers, join a religious institution that you are most comfortable with and meet other people. Being around people, even if you don’t know them, can help fill a void during the holidays. Join their events and social mixers, and be a part of a crowd. It might even lead to something, like a date, or even, meeting your future spouse.
