Bill Clinton Tones Down Defense of Hillary, Continues To Campaign For Her

While Bill Clinton said that he has learned a lesson, he said that everything he said about Senator Barack Obama of Illinois were “factually accurate.” But, Bill Clinton said that everything said about what he said was “factually inaccurate.”

I think the mistake that I made is to think that I was a spouse like any other spouse who could defend his candidate,” Clinton said in regards to his wife, Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York. Hillary Clinton is in a tight battle with Barack Obama for the Democratic nomination.

“I think I can promote Hillary but not defend her because I was president. I have to let her defend herself or have someone else defend her,” Clinton explained in regards to his wife.

During the eve of New Hampshire’s primary, Clinton said that Obama’s opposition to the Iraq War was a fairy tale. While in South Carolina, Clinton said that Obama’s victory would be a racial one which is similar to what Reverend Jesse Jackson said twenty years ago.

“A lot of the things that were said were factually inaccurate,” Clinton explained. He added: “I did not ever criticize Senator Obama personally in South Carolina. … But I think whenever I defend her, I, A, risk being misquoted, and, B, risk being the story. I don’t want to be the story.”

While the defense for Hillary has toned down, Bill Clinton said that he has no intentions of campaigning for his wife though some of the critics give a suggestion that it is not appropriate for a former president to be taking sides in a nomination race.

Clinton said he would not interfere with his Hillary’s work or advisers if she is elected.

“I will do what I’m asked to do,” Clinton said in that regard. He added: “I will not be in the Cabinet. I will not be on the staff full-time. I will not in any way interfere with the work of a strong vice president, strong secretary of State, strong secretary of Treasury.”
