The discontent and rebellion in the state unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party over seat allocation has inhibited the party from declaring the list of its remaining candidates for the assembly polls.
With only four days to go for the last date for filing nominations, the party’s central election committee was supposed to take a decision on the candidates for the remaining 53 of the 119 seats given to the BJP under the alliance agreement with the Shiv Sena .
after the first list of 66 candidates on September 19, on Monday, only 20 more names could be decided, the significant one being that of Pankaja Palave, daughter of BJP national general secretary Gopinath Munde.
Munde wanted the party to clear names for most of the seats, if not all. The party, however, felt that differences and problems need to be sortedto prevent unseemly protests and rebellion by the state BJP functionaries. BJP leaders downplayed the protests and differences being aired openly, claiming these were temporary and the protestors would calm down.
BJP spokesperson Prakash Javadekar said that price rise, poor performance of the state
government and the combined anti-incumbency of two consecutive terms would play an important role in the elections.
