ISLAMABAD: British Prime Minister Brown will be sending his Foreign Minister David Miliband to Pakistan to discuss matters of mutual interest and the situation in the region. This was conveyed in a call to President Pervez Musharraf when Gordon Brown telephoned him on Tuesday to congratulate him on the successful holding of elections in Pakistan.
No dates were given for the first senior British official to visit Pakistan but it is possible that the visit would take place after the formation of new government in Islamabad. The spokesman at the Foreign Office said: "The British prime minister also informed the president that Pakistan should return to Commonwealth to resume its role as an important member."
It was not immediately known what position the president took on this offer to return once again to the colonial club, but in all probability it would be a decision again for the new prime minister to take.
"The president said that it was a matter of deep satisfaction that elections had taken place peacefully. They were free, fair and transparent as he had committed to the nation," added the spokesman.
The president said now the process is moving forward for the convening of the national and provincial assemblies and formation of new governments. This will strengthen the democratic traditions and institutions in Pakistan, he added.
