My friend brought me for supper after drinks to this self-styled Korean pub straddled between bridal shops and boutique offices. I love it! It’s so obscure and totally unexpected!
Inside everything’s as usual: nice strains of Korean music, flat-screen TV overhead with K-drama and smiling Korean lady manager.
We looked through the menu. My friend highly recommended the spicy chicken stew as it’s the only thing he ever eats the few times he comes here. Also he likes the KFC (Korean fried chicken).
I like spicy stuff, so spicy pupa soup got my attention.
"What’s spicy pupa?" I asked the waiter. He spoke little English, so he struggled for a few seconds and said "bees" (I widened my eyes), then "honey". Right. We were lost in translation.
The patient guy disappeared and came back a mo later with a can of pupa for us. You know those cans they use to pack ready-to-eat tuna? those with the easy-to-open metal rings? Except that on it was the picture of the segmented bodies of bugs, marinated in some sauce.
Ok. Maybe eating bugs are fine. I’ve heard of it, but I didn’t know it was so popular among Koreans that they pack it in cans like tuna.
So. I shared spicy chicken stew with my friend. It’s spicy and nice.
