Former St. Marks Wrestler Bobby Telford shines at Iowa

Willauer-Contributing Editor-Rutgers Athletic Center-Piscataway, NJ-1-2-15:Bobby Telford, a former 2 time state champion at heavyweight is currently in his senior year with the Hawkeyes of the University of Iowa. With a career record in high school overall of 118-37 and in his last 2 years recorded an 80-1 record where in his senior year he was defeated at the Beast of the East Wrestling Tournament, won 2 Delaware State Wrestling Titles 2 time conference champion and went 8-0 in the Virginia Wrestling Duals. In his first year at Iowa in 2010-11 the former St. Marks star posted a 22-4 record as he pinned 13 opponents and 2 major decisions. The Hawkeye senior has qualified for the NCAA’s all three times where he has become a 2 time place finisher and carries career record of 90-22 record and currently leads the Hawkeyes with 9 pins this season. Last week, Bobby Telford was named Big 10 Wrestler of the Week for his 4-2 decision over Northwestern’s Mike McMullen.
Bobby Telford on his career at St. Marks and Iowa: “When I wrestled as a freshman at St. Marks, I started at 135 pounds and didn’t do so well.” “I had good coaches at St. Marks and one of my mentors was my father as I worked my way up to heavyweight as I improved a lot in my junior and senior years winning key matches along with 2 state titles and here I am as I jumped on board with the Hawks.” “In my junior year at the Beast I defeated a top ranked opponent 2-1 in the final round I was 11th seed and defeated some of the top 10 wrestlers in my weight class.” “I wrestled hard this season which is a relation of why I am wrestling at Iowa that is a part of my life.” ” Jason Bastianelli was a great coach and was always there using his resources and let’s him develop you in the room which has helped me improve a lot.” After I graduated from St. Marks, I decided to redshirt at Iowa where I’ve won the Junior Nationals while I was a member of the Jr world team and wrestled in Germany where I went 3-1 and lost to a wrestler from Turkey which was a great experience to help me get into the lineup for my first year.” “I defeated a Big 10 champion in the wrestle offs to earn my colors there here and hear I am in my senior year wrestling at Carver Hawkeye Arena which is a family atmosphere as they expect a lot out of you talking about relationships your expected to perform and to bring home the bread (National Titles) and that is what it’s all about they like wrestling.” “They like winners and putting opponents away when you have fans supporting you as they want national titles no silver or bronze trophies they want gold medals and people talk about the nationals a lot but I want to talk about my partying which is the NCAA’s in St. Louis people look at me and say I want to party this is the college level and to wrestling for the national title.” “Mike McMullen of Northwestern who I wrestled at the Midlands was a tight match where I won 4-2 I’ve wrestled him before but that is not my title, my goal is to be NCAA champion this year and we stepped on that stone.” “Ohio State is my next opponent that is why you wrestle for the Big 10 and for Iowa we have been on the road for almost a wee
