Programmes For Women Empowerment
New Delhi (PIB-GR-TYP-BIN): The meeting of the Consultative Committee of Parliament attached to the Ministry of Women and Child Development was held in New Delhi on November 19, to generate ideas on scheme like Special Mahila Police Volunteers & other programmes for women empowerment. The Members of Parliament, Mrs. Pratima Mondal (LS), Mrs. K Maragatham (LS), Mrs. Viplove Thakur (RS) and Mrs. Bimla Kashyap Sood (RS) participated in the meeting.
The Minister of Women and Child Development, Mrs. Maneka Sanjay Gandhi briefed the Committee members about scheme of Special Mahila Police Volunteers (MPVs), an initiative for facilitating Police force through community volunteerism and other initiatives taken by the Government for women’s welfare such as One Stop Centre for women affected by violence, Women Helpline across the country with the single number 181 to meet women’s emergency and non-emergency needs and Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao.
Appreciating the initiative of MPVs, the Committee members suggested that the candidates should be given good training to make the scheme fully beneficial for women. The members of the Committee suggested to identify those people for Special Mahila Police Volunteers who could understand the victim’s problems and facilitate women in distress guide them properly.
The Minister responded positively to the suggestions from the Committee members and said that the MPVs shall report the incidence of violence against women, domestic violence and dowry harassment. She said that the MPVs shall be given an Identity Card to authorize their identity and engagement with public. The contribution of the MPVs will be rewarded annually, the Minister added.
A presentation was also made during the meeting. Senior officials of the Ministry of Women and Child Development were also present at the meeting.
