An irate mob attacked the police station at Kodumur in Kurnool district of Andhra Pradesh on Saturday accusing one of the constables of molesting a woman. The police detained the woman in a theft case five days ago.
According to reports, local people, supported by various people’s organisations, were protesting since morning alleging that constable Nagaraju had molested the woman.
As the size of the mob swelled to around 1,500, the protesters began pelting stones. The missiles hit the protesters themselves in the front causing injuries to some. The police resorted to lathicharge to disperse the crowd. Armed Reserve troops brought back normality in the town. Additional SP Manmohan and Deputy SP Ramnath visited the place. Five persons were taken into custody in connection with the attack and search was on for the remaining. Meanwhile, the police denied the charge that the constable had molested the woman. However a case was registered against the constable on the complaint given by the victim.
