CREDIBILITY OF UN’s SRI LANKA WAR CRIMES INITIATIVES
To the despairing victims of the Sri Lankan (SL
genocide, the UN caving in to the bluff and
bluster of the SL regime invites a tragedy of historic
proportions. Besides encouraging SL to
launch the next phase of its genocide with impunity
to totally annihilate Tamil Eelam from the
face of the earth, it also resurrects the grave
genocide culture that was successfully buried by
the international community in the 1990’s. Only the
war crimes initiatives of the humane international
community is capable of restraining SL from
intensifying the on-going genocide on the Eelam
Tamils. SL expecting its efforts to throttle UN’s war
crimes initiatives is sending out clear signals of its
intent to intensify its genocide to completion using
the slogan ‘winner takes all’ (Palitha Kohona), a
dated and decrepit doctrine.
Accordingly though the regime audaciously claimed
to have released the bulk of the civilian IDPs
originally herded like cattle into (and held) the
notorious barb wire fenced Narayanan
-Gothabhaya concentration camps since May2009,
in fact only a handful were allowed to return
to their homes. The South Block bureaucrats in
Delhi and the UN though fully aware that SL’s
claims on the IDPs released are deceitfully untrue
they still compliment Colombo on this; the
objective being to delay the appointment of the UN
expert team to advise Ban on the SL war
crimes. SL believes that the international community
could be tired out into forgetting about SL’s war
crimes using contrived excuses to delay UN’s action
on the war crimes. Here SL overlooked current
history that there is no time bar for UN initiating war
crimes actions against offending regimes. Hence
SL’s efforts to throttle UN actions on its war crimes
do not guarantee it against UN actions being taken
any time in the future. SL’s actions holding back
the IDPs returning also constitutes war crimes though
it contributes to successfully erasing the
demographic reality of the Tamil homelands in SL.
The UN and the international community are unlikely
to overlook the demographic genocide Implications
involved in these.
To label the Tamil militancy ‘terrorism’ is a misnomer
under the nuanced approach of the post Bush or
Obama-Hilary era. Its birth in the 1980’s is the
product of the pain of the demographic genocide
that began soon after Ceylon’s 1947 independence;
long before Tamil militancy was born effectively
ending the three (50’s to 80’s) decades long
demographic genocide in SL. The Delhi-South Block
conspired with the SL regime to destroy this
militancy, orphaning the Tamils without the militant’s
protection and opening the flood gates for a fresh
wave of demographic genocide intent on subjugating
Eelam Tamils for good under a Buddhist Sinhala
armed forces permanent occupation of the Tamil
homelands. The SL regime provides substantial
incentives to Buddhist Sinhalas to immorally occupy
the homes of the displaced Eelam Tamils
deliberately held back in transit and in the main
Vanni camps using spurious excuses. SL rejected
off hand an annoyed Delhi’s proposal to distribute its
aid directly to the displaced Tamils to expedite
their return home to end their misery.
Other measures in the Rajapakse regime’s package
‘to remove the concept of traditional
homelands’ (Athulath Mudali, the National Security
Minister of the UNP era) have far more serious
implications; it is demographic genocide. The
Athulath Mudali’s statement of intent on the SL
demographic genocide to erase the Tamil
homelands underpins the systemic deep ethnic
cleansing Buddhist-Sinhala mindset nurtured by
successive SL regimes. This precedes the
emergence of Tamil militancy. Accordingly the SL
regime in a brazen manner diverted Indian funding
meant for the rehabilitation of the displaced Eelam
Tamils to actually fund the demographic genocide
using ethnic cleansing; settling in Buddhist-Sinhalas
in the homes of the displaced and strengthening the
SL armed forces presence to protect those
Buddhist-Sinhalas settlers. Indian aid also went to
fund the building of numerous new Buddhist
temples in the Tamil homelands erasing the original
Hindu identity and giving the Tamil homelands a
Buddhist character. The Hindu temples and
churches were destroyed in the Rajapakse regimes
‘scotched earth’ attacks in 2009. This Buddhist
Sinhala intent to transform the Hindu Tamil
homelands into a Buddhist Sinhala territory is
evident in Dayan Jayatilleka faulting (‘Is Re-birth
possible? ‘in the Sri Lanka Guardian, June 02) Ranil
Wickremesinghe for his electoral defeat to his
statements ‘..if the UNP wins, all high security zones
and military bases would be removed, and..Sri
Lankan military could restrict itself to the Jaffna fort…
All of this goes to show how exactly intelligent the
thinking of Ranil..really is..’ The lack of civility shines
out in the line in italics. This statement is atypical of a
Buddhist Sinhala genocide bigot (to keep the Eelam
Tamils under permanent Buddhist Sinhala army
subjugation) based on an outlandish faith in ‘winner
takes all’ doctrine.
Only progress in the UN war crimes initiative will
deter SL from acts that caused immense pain
to Eelam Tamils for six decades. Basil Rajapakse’s
‘para demala’ label for Sivalingam his Tamil
cabinet colleague and D Wijetunge’s (an ex-SL
President) 1993 ‘Minorities (Eelam Tamils) are
like creepers clinging to the Sinhala tree’ are just
examples from the long list of the prejudiced
one liners vouching to the systemic divide between
the two entities that led Sir Hugh Leghorn, a Colonial
Secretary to conclude as early as June 1799:
“Two different nations from a very ancient period
have divided between them the possession of the
Island: the Sinhalese inhabiting the interior in its
Southern and Western parts..and the Malabar
(Tamils) who possess the Northern and Eastern
Districts. These two nations differ entirely in their
religion, language and manners.” The Buddhist
Sinhala prejudice now unrestrained without the
protective umbrella of the Tamil militancy leaves the
Eelam Tamils exposed to the mercies of a horrific
SL reign of terror that has silenced them into total
subjugation. Thanks to the Delhi-Narayanan without
the Tamil militants there will no longer be any Tamil
homelands for the Eelam Tamils except life under a
permanent Buddhist Sinhala military occupation.
Disgruntled quislings (DBS Jeyaraj likes) continue to
sing the same old anti-militancy (LTTE) swan song
as directed by patron Hindu Ram to shamefully urge
Eelam Tamils to move forward accepting the eternal
servitude under a Buddhist Sinhala military
occupation and not trust India/TN or the international
community that vociferously espouse the Tamil
cause exposing SL;s war crimes soley to redress
the sufferings of the Eelam Tamils. The blunderous
admission of the SL President Rajapakse
to killing the militants (as ‘terrorists’) though offering
to surrender, admits to that war crime. According to
the present SL regime and the Buddhist – Sinhalas
any Eelam Tamil is a terrorist exceptions being the
Douglas Devananda, Karuna, or DBS Jeyaraj types.
Such blanket stereotyping is dangerous though un-
acceptable to the international community, more so
now under the Obama/Hilary nuanced stance that
takes into account state terrorist acts nurturing
militancy.
News following the impeccable professionalism of
Lynn Pascoe’s report to Ban to proceed on the
proposed UN expert panel on SL’s war crimes is
undoing the damage that the South Block agent
Nambiar caused to UN’s image after a time critical
visit to SL to save the lives of the tens of thousands
civilians along with leaders of the militants whom the
US offered to ‘ship out’ to save them from the SL
massacres. Nambiar’s earlier SL contract
obligations explains his queer compromising
behavior unacceptable by standards of conduct
expected from UN bureaucrats. The result was the
massacres that Nambiar’s visit was meant to
prevent and now the subject of the UN war crimes
initiatives.
SL successfully misled the world community but the
forthright and upright Navaneetha Pillai observed the
highest standards of conduct up-holding the values
and principles enshrined in the UN system. The
screams that her latest statement on SL war crimes
evoked a crude reference to her hunger for ‘..a
pound of flesh off Sri Lanka..’. These did not deter
her from her mission to deliver justice to the victims
of SL’s war crimes. SL also targeted the morally
impeccable Amnesty International (AI) and the
International Crisis Group ICG) and other
organizations for scathing abuse; in a shock
reaction to the impending exposure of the truth on
SL massacres to establish the accountability of
those offending before international courts.
