Sarawak,Malaysia; Monday.
It is happening again. A Dayak tribal graveyard, situated at Chawan Lane in the City of Kuching has been broken into and vandalised.
Eventhough many people believed in Ghosts, there are those few who are not afraid of them. Some people in this city even joked that Ghosts are not that brave either. They may be bad but Ghosts dare not spite these grave raiders.
The Dayak tribal graveyard concerned which have been unused since the 1980-s is actually quite vast, about four hectares in size. unfortunately, being at the fringe of a city has its negative side. It is surrounded by workshops and garages.
These many workshops are in many ways than one is it’s misgivings. It is a perfect cover for would-be trespassers and vandals.
According to the various Dayak organisation in the city, the graveyard started to receive its first body in 1850, that is during the reign of the Second Rajah Of Sarawak, Rajah Charles Brooke. From then on members of the Dayak tribe, Kayan, orang Ulu, and Bidayuh who died in the city are buried there.
Meanwhile, members of the National Dayak Iban association [SADIA[, The Dayak Bidayuh National Organisation[DBNU] Orang Ulu National Organisation[OUNA] have initiated a community work programme to clear the graveyard.
Spencer Birai, one of the leaders of SADIA called upon members of the Dayak community in and around the city of Kuching to come forward and help in clearing the site.
When approached by the press and inquired about the trespassing incident, members of the association refused to comment.
