Amputation is a removal of a part of or all part of the extremity or limb through surgical operation. It’s done when there’s a severe injury, cancerous tumor, infection, neuroma, diabetes and others.
People who undergo amputation usually experience various degrees of pains, sensations or irritations, even after the surgery. It is said to be a part of the healing process, something they must endure until their cells or tissues completely heal.
Prosthetic factor
A prosthesis is an artificially made device substituting and functioning like the lost limb. Be selective in choosing the most appropriate design and hire an expert with experience in customizing prosthesis. How often you use a prosthesis and how well it fits affect your healing process. Poorly made ones can cause complications like skin diseases.
Strict care
Prosthesis solutions give you another chance of being active while having amputations. Aside from wearing prosthetics, doing extra care is a requirement.
Avoid injuries such as bumps and bruises as much as possible. They will cause unnecessary swelling. Also, wear good supporting shoe. Never wear slippers as they will slip from the prosthesis very easily, and may even cause an accident. Choose woolen or cotton sock, not nylon or synthetic so that you can limit perspiration. Lastly, learn when you can remove prosthetics and when not to. This will depend on how much pain you feel.
Skin care
Proper stump hygiene is an essential part of recovering from surgery. Skin with stump is not designed for weight bearing nor uneven pressures or frictions against the skin. Preventing skin diseases and other complications are possible through:
- Using garment or bandages for reducing swelling and scarring
- Picking appropriate hypoallergenic non-soap cleanser and using them properly
- Having antiperspirants limiting moisture
- Getting calluses treatment when necessary
- Using the appropriate antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal agents
- Applying moisturizers the right way and in the right time
- Acquiring clean liner and sockets, etc.
Physical therapy at home
Being stuck at home is the perfect time to practice using your artificial limb. You can undergo physical therapy by yourself, or with an aid. Of course, the latter is highly recommended.
While learning to use prosthesis might be difficult at first, trust that you will learn and master using it in time. Exercises at home also improve muscle strength and control. Limit your movements until you eventually restore or gain strength to carry out daily activities with little to no support.
Final Thoughts
People’s stump condition usually leads to an emotional and psychological struggle. They undergo certain medications or counseling sessions for a smooth transition and full recovery.
Remember, grieving over on a lost limb is not helping. Knowing how to recover from it gives you another chance to realize your self-worth. You can always find corrective measures and devices to help you cope up. What’s really important is acceptance– acceptance of your new body and adjusting to it. There’s no need to rush, though. Take your time during recovery.
