The United Marxist-Leninist (UML) has forwarded its ex-Secretary General Madhav Kumar Nepal as the candidate for the first President of the Republican Nepal. Nepal had been defeated by Maoists in two constituencies. Although UML has stood as the third party, it has claimed the Presidential post ignoring the fact that the majority of Nepalis have elected Maoist Supremo Prachanda whose party had proposed him as the first President of Nepal. People gave Maoists 120 seats in the direct election while they gave more than two times fewer seats to the Nepali Congress (NC) and the UML each. However, the NC and the UML disagreed to make Prachanda the president.
Maoists, as the chief proponents of federal republic, claimed the post of the first president of Nepal. After the UML and the NC insisted on their own candates, the Maoists gave up this claim. They have primarily proposed a veteran republican fighter Ram Raja Prasad Singh as the option. They have refused to make Girija Prasad Koirala the president suspecting him of being closer to other power quarters harming national interests.
The people yet don’t know what may follow while the debate on the ‘first president’ is going on. They would in the main prefer not the ex-monarchists as the candidates for the presidential post. They would prefer the candidates who devoted their life to the republican movement in the country.
