In the earlier versions of MS Outlook, ScanOST.exe was available as an inbuilt utility for repairing OST files when they get corrupted due to various reasons or while synchronization. But, with the launch of Outlook 2010 and latest versions this built-in repair tool is no more available and the only way left to deal with the corrupted OST is migrate an Offline OST file to Outlook PST file and then delete the existing OST file. This can be done via following the below mentioned procedures:
Solution 1: Export OST File to Outlook PST:
The export process can be implemented via following the given procedure:
- In Outlook 2010, go to “File” menu and then select “Open”.
- Select “Import” option from the right panel of the application.
- “Import and Export” wizard will open, select “Export to a File” option and select “Next”.
- In the then appeared window, select “Outlook Data File (pst)” option and click on “Next”.
- Next, select the folders that needs to be migrated to Outlook 2010 PST files.
- Click on the checkbox available with “Include Subfolders” option (if required) and select “Next”.
- Afterwards, select the source location for the OST file by clicking on the “Browse” button.
- Select any among the given options that asks to replace, allow or exclude duplicates from the selected file and click on “Finish” button.
- Provide the location for saving the PST file and click on “OK”.
- It will prompt for password credentials, leave the fields empty and click “OK”.
Limitations Associated to this Approach: This overall export procedure is quite lengthier and time consuming as well. Moreover, you need to acquire sound technical knowledge as the process is a bit complex and if not implemented in an appropriate manner; could lead to loss of information.
Solution 2: Move OST Mailbox Items to PST:
Another way to migrate an Offline OST file to Outlook PST file, is by transferring them on one-by-one basis. OST mailbox items can be transferred to Outlook PST mailbox through drag and drop process.
Limitations Associated to this Approach: Though this procedure seems to be simpler but the major drawback is that you can transfer only one item at a single instance of time as this process does not support batch migration. Moreover, you cannot transfer OST mailboxes’ default folders such as emails, calendars; contacts etc. through this process and can move personalized folders only.
Solution 3: Conversion via Commercial Software
The ideal way to migrate an offline OST file to Outlook PST file is via commercial or professional solution. OST Recovery tool protects the integrity of all the attributes of OST files while converting them to the PST format. It helps recovering corrupted OST files as well as allows extracting deleted data from the file. The tool performs ‘Quick’ and ‘Advance’ recovery scans on the infected file and helps saving recovered data in the form of PST as well as EML and MSG file formats. ‘Mail filters’ integrated within the tool enables recovering specified period data; instead of exporting entire OST data components.
Conclusion:
As a whole, the manual conversion procedures are complicated way of data conversion and highly prone to loss of information. However, the commercial way of implementing conversion from OST files to PST is an efficient and absolute method that delivers accurate output without making compromises with the integrity of incorporated data components.
