Tharus–one of the indigenous communities of Nepal–have continued their protests for almost two weeks in the plains of the country. They have decided to intensify their strikes as the government has failed to agree on their major demand of guaranteeing all the Tharus proportional rights all the sectors of Nepal.
The Nepal government on Wednesday had said that it needed more consultations within the cabinet as well as party organizations for considering such a serious demand with long-term impact.
The Tharus refused to withdraw their strikes despite the government’s request for relieving people of painful lives. The Tharus say that they want their original identity to be respected and that they do not want to be dominated by those who immigrated into Nepal from India. Protesters have been closing down highways, marketplaces, educational institutions and industries the towns in Kailali, Bardia, Chitwan, Bara, Parsa, Sarlahi, Nawalparasi, Sunsari and other districts of the country.
Reports say thousands of passsengers have been stranded as their travelling routes have been blocked.
Reports from the Far-Western sources say food crisis is gradually shaping up due to the nonstop protests.
