CHITRAL: Live stock department of Chitral need attention of the authority. Inhabitants of the area mostly peasants, farmers having cattle but they facing numerous problems due to lack of essential facilities of live stock. There is only one district headquarters veterinary hospital for animal at Chitral and 6 Civil Veterinary hospitals in the district but most of these hospitals are running without veterinary doctor. Like Ayun, Drosh, Garamchishma, Mastuj, Booni while 17 veterinary dispensaries existing in the district. Hence there is only one doctor at civil veterinary hospital Garamchishma, 2 doctors on long leave (half pay) and other posts are vacant since long while 17 veterinary assistants serving in civil dispensaries Dr. Fazal Ghaffar District Livestock Officer (DLO) said in an exclusive interview to this scribe. Some 840 animals are being treated every month in these veterinary centers and 600 animals are vaccinating similarly 1000 poultry also vaccinating each month he added.
Hence artificial insemination (for breeding) is not possible here due to remoteness of the locality and blockage of land route. Because carrying of Liquid Nitrogen Semen for this purpose is not possible by Air in PIA flights due to fear of blasting. We also arranging mobile veterinary clinic in different parts of Chitral. As there are 174842 cattle in Chitral, 296 bulls, 347977 sheep, 181146 goats, 295 horses, 63 Mules, 3256 Asses (donkey) and 423749 poultry existing in Chitral as per censes of 2006 of livestock of Chitral. A project of SLSP (Strengthening of Livestock Service Project) funded by European Union fro Chitral is launching here very soon. In which wool processing unit will launched here and pure wool be prepared here for commercial purpose. Machinery has been installed here where pure wool preparing for knitting sweaters and warm cloth like Chitrali Patti. Besides it farmers are being trained for first aid treatment of animal in case of non availability of a qualified veterinary doctor or assistant.
Talking about shortage of milk at Chitral Dr. Fazal Ghaffar said that main reason of shortage of milk is lack and non availability of fodder. Hence during farmers training fodder demonstration development project will also be launched here for solving of this problem. “We are facing a problem of non availabilities of local Veterinary Assistant.” And a special quota for Chitral may be sanctioned he demanded. Strategy should be framed for this purpose for giving preference to local candidates in recruitment of Veterinary assistants. He said that 2 training workshop will be arranged for Farmers at Garamchisma and Bumborate regarding treatment of animal in which kits, necessary medicines are providing to farmers. Besides it other training for women folk will be held in poultry especially for housewives to save from bird flue he added.
