Reporting from Siliguri – Ryot broke out in the foot hill of the Himalayas in North Bengal on Saturday mornig, with large part of the Dooars witnessing bloody street fight between the Nepali speaking population and Adivasis. At the end of the day two persons were dead — One Nepali , the other Adivasi. The rift between the communities had been there for long and Saturday’s clash made it worse. Adivasies clashed with GJM supports at Banerhat, Chamurchi, Birpara in Jalpaiguri, while Janagara Mancha members confronted GJM with tacic support from CPM on the outskirts of Siliguri town ————- Debidanga and Milamore, near the Government circuit house.
The dead have been identified as Sunil Mondal (28) of Chamurchi and Akbar Lama (45) of Ethelbari . Manash Ghosh a Bengali, sustained bullet injuries while passing through Debidanga. The clash left 100 injured — 20 were admitted with critical injuries in hospitals spread over Jalpaiguri Sadar, Birpara and Banerhat.
Many were arrested during the day, State Home Secretary Ardhendu said Writers’ Builgings . Section 144 has been imposed in 9 Police Station areas.
Gorkha Jana Mukti Morcha will take out a black flag rally in Darjeeling and in Dooars on Sunday in protest aganist the ‘Police in action’. GJM’s youth wings said it would not allow Government Official including the Block Development Officer even the District Magistrate, to come to the hills from Monday.
The mob fury was at its worst in Chamurchi and places such as Debidanga and Milanmore in Siliguri’s back yard near the Government’s Circuit House. Completely out numbered, the Police to tackle the situation, despite threats from Akhil Bharatiya Adibasi Vikash Parshad on Friday.
