The Island of Kefalonia has been devastated by a series of earthquakes. The first major quake struck the island on January 26th, registering 6.0 on the Richter scale. Following the initial earthquake, the island has been subjected to a barrage of over 100 aftershocks, ranging from 3.9 to a second major quake on February 2nd, registering 5.9 on the Richter scale.
The towns of Lixouri, Livadi and Agios Dimitrios have suffered the bulk of the devastation, it is estimated that the damage in Lixouri and its surrounding villages has exceeded One Billion Euro. Hundreds of families have been left homeless and are currently living in temporary tent cities provided by the Greek Army. This catastrophe has left the elderly and children in a drastic state of emergency and in dire need of basic needs.
Our goal is to provide immediate funding for emergency items and service to the residents. Should our fund raising efforts be significant, we hope to secure sufficient funds to aid in the rebuilding of Saint Dionisios Church in Livadi, Kefalonia.
