An earthquake with a magnitude of 4.9 points on Richter scale hit the Southwest part of Iceland at 21:33 GMT on the 29th of May 2009. Exactly a year earlier a big earthquake hit the southern part of the country, measuring 6.8 on the Richter scale and destroying about 40 houses but fortunately without human casualties.
This earthquake yesterday seems to have been the climax of a series of earthquakes which started around 17:00 GMT. There where three strong ones, one 2.8 points at 18:22 and another of magnitude 3.7 points at 21:33:46 and then 3 seconds later the biggest hit at 21:33:49 and 4.9 points on Richter scale.
No damages or casualties have been reported.
